Synopsis

"Two Thirds" tackles the challenging task of making fraction concepts accessible and engaging for young learners aged 6-9. This innovative educational resource transforms the abstract notion of fractions, particularly two-thirds, into tangible understanding through a carefully structured three-part approach that progresses from concrete objects to mathematical notation. The book's unique strength lies in its systematic methodology, which follows the concrete-pictorial-abstract learning sequence. Beginning with familiar objects like pizzas and candy bars, it gradually builds comprehension through visual representations before introducing formal mathematical concepts. What sets this resource apart is its integration of proven teaching methods with cognitive development research, offering educators and parents a comprehensive toolkit that includes step-by-step activity guides, visual aids, and assessment tools. Throughout its chapters, the book maintains a clear focus on building fundamental understanding rather than promoting rote memorization. It addresses common learning challenges through multiple teaching styles and provides cross-curricular connections to subjects like science and art. The practical applications, from cooking measurements to geometric art projects, help demonstrate the relevance of fractions in everyday life while building a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical concepts. This approach ensures that students develop not just computational skills, but genuine mathematical reasoning abilities that will serve them well in future learning.

According to Osho, laughter is "the very essence of Zen". And while the theme of these talks is that meditation - watching, remaining alert and aware - is the path to self-realization, Osho encourages us first to "be happy, and meditation will follow".
Through Zen stories, jokes and answers to questions, Osho highlights our conditioning - our learned social and cultural behavior and beliefs - as the barrier to our natural state of happiness.
Wielding his words like a humorous, compassionate Zen stick, Osho shows us how we can begin to recognize our conditioning and see that it is not the same as our authentic self.
"This is the whole effort of all the masters: to create a sudden clash of thunder so those who are fast asleep can be awakened." (Osho)

China's military has entered a new era. It has acquired modern weapons to rival the world's finest, undergone a massive restructuring under Xi Jinping, and been on the frontlines of territorial disputes with Japan, India, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It is readying forces to be able to seize Taiwan sometime in the next decade. It aims to be a "world-class" military on par with the United States.

China's Quest for Military Supremacy provides a broad and accessible exploration of Chinese military power, including relations between the Chinese Communist Party and its army, the strategic worldview of Chinese leaders, military strategy and resourcing, conventional and nuclear modernization, military diplomacy and coercion, preparations for war, and the People's Liberation Army's emerging global role. It also identifies the challenges facing China's military and shows how its focus on supremacy in the region means that it is not yet prepared to fight with the same lethality beyond Asia. Different futures are possible, and the book concludes with a preview of what it might take for a truly "world-class" Chinese military to take the global stage.

Hungary, 1944. Almost half a million Jewish Hungarians are deported to Auschwitz. Among the few surviving Hungarian Jews from this era were young men who, like Ervin Wolf, were forced into the brutal Labor Service where they were cut off from the outside world and forced to endure inhumane brutalities and servitude. Once freed, a new oppression took hold as communist rule under Stalin turned friends to foes, enveloped the nation in fear and suspicion, and tested everyone’s character and strength.
This is the true story of Ervin Wolf and his family as the fascist tide of Eastern Europe takes hold of Hungary. From the Wolfs’ comfortable upper-class life to imprisonment, daring escapes, tragic deaths, cloak-and-dagger adventures, and Ervin’s final escape to freedom in the dead of night, Not a Real Enemy is a page-turning tale of suspense, tragedy, comedy, and ultimately, triumph.

The L where a tabletop meets the legs, the T between double doors, the D of an armchair's oval backrest—all around us is an alphabet in things. But how did these shapes make it onto the page, never mind form complex structures such as this sentence? In The Greatest Invention, Silvia Ferrara takes a profound look at how—and how many times—human beings have managed to produce the miracle of written language, traveling back and forth in time and all across the globe to Mesopotamia, Crete, China, Egypt, Central America, Easter Island, and beyond.

With Ferrara as our guide, we examine the enigmas of undeciphered scripts, including famous cases like the Phaistos Disk and the Voynich Manuscript; we touch the knotted, colored strings of the Inca quipu; we study the turtle shells and ox scapulae that bear the earliest Chinese inscriptions; we watch in awe as Sequoyah single-handedly invents a script for the Cherokee language; and we venture to the cutting edge of decipherment, in which high-powered laser scanners bring tears to an engineer's eye.

A code-cracking tour around the globe, The Greatest Invention chronicles a previously uncharted journey, one filled with past flashes of brilliance, present-day scientific research, and a faint, fleeting glimpse of writing's future.

    On liberty

In the tract on Liberty, Mill is advocating the rights of the individual as against Society at the very opening of an era that was rapidly coming to the conclusion that the individual had no absolute rights against Society. The eighteenth century view is that individuals existed first, each with their own special claims and responsibilities: that they deliberately formed a Social State, either by a contract or otherwise, and that then finally they limited their own action out of regard for the interests of the social organism thus arbitrarily produced. This is hardly the view of the nineteenth century. It is possible that logically the individual is prior to the State; historically and in the order of Nature, the State is prior to the individual. In other words, such rights as every single personality possesses in a modern world do not belong to him by an original ordinance of Nature, but are slowly acquired in the growth and development of the social state.
