Synopsis

"Physics of Sports" explores the fundamental physics principles underpinning athletic performance across various sports. It unveils the science of motion, energy, and materials within the realm of athletics, offering insights into how physics affects everything from running speed to the trajectory of sports projectiles. For instance, understanding aerodynamics helps explain how spin influences a curveball or how a ski jumper achieves flight. The book delves into the aerodynamics of sports projectiles, the biomechanics of human movement, and the properties of sports equipment. Examining muscle movement, joint action, and leverage reveals how athletes efficiently generate force and power. By connecting physics, engineering, physiology, and sports science, this book bridges the gap between abstract physics concepts, like Newton's laws of motion and energy conservation, and real-world sports applications.

The book's structure progresses from introducing fundamental physics concepts to applying them to specific sports, analyzing athletic movements, and considering practical applications such as optimizing training techniques. Supported by real-world examples, experimental data, and computer simulations, "Physics of Sports" enhances our understanding of athletic achievements and provides insights into optimizing training and equipment design. This makes it valuable for sports enthusiasts, science students, coaches, and those in the sports equipment industry.

Silkman boasts an impressive playing career which lasted 16 years, playing for 11 different clubs including Manchester City. A gifted and skilful player, he was your archetypal Cockney, with Romany gypsy appearance with a shock of black curly hair, tan and socks rolled around his ankles. He always felt he had an eye for a good player and when a friend was without a club, he brokered a deal to get him a 2-year contract – soon all the player’s friends started calling Silks, and his life as a football agent began. He went on to become one of the 10 most influential agents in football (Metro 2013) representing Jaap Stam, Yakubu, Patrik Berger, Soucek (West Ham) and organised Zidane to join Newcastle. Silk’s talents transferred across to the showbiz industry where he organised artists and tours in a fascinating post-playing career. Some of the names he worked with were Mickie Most, David Gest, Rod Stewart. Kim Wilde, Phil Collins, and Dionne Warwick.

Henry Louis Gehrig (June 19, 1903 to June 2, 1941), born in New York City, was an American baseball player who played 17 seasons for the New York Yankees (1923–1939). Gehrig was renowned for his prowess as a hitter and for his durability, which earned him the nickname the "Iron Horse," and he is regarded as one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Gehrig was an All-Star seven consecutive times, a Triple Crown winner once, an American League Most Valuable Player twice and a member of six World Series championship teams. He had a career .340 batting average, hit 493 home runs, and had 1,995 RBIs. He is also one of 19 players to hit four home runs in a single game. In 1939, Gehrig was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and was the first MLB player to have his uniform number retired by a team, when his number 4 was retired by the Yankees. The following recording is a radio interview from August 1939 after Gehrig had retired from baseball due to his illness, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable neuromuscular illness which, since then, is often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease."

The New York Times bestselling author of Slow Getting Up chronicles his descent into the madness of early retirement and fantasy football.
In Slow Getting Up—hailed by Rolling Stone as ""the best football memoir of all time""—Nate Jackson told his story face down on the field. Now, in Fantasy Man, he’s flat on his back.
Six years have passed since the former Denver Broncos tight end wore a helmet, and every day he drifts further from the NFL Guy, the sanctioned-violence guy, the psychopath who ran head first into other psychos for money. But Nate hasn’t quite left the game. Bed-ridden by a recent surgery to remove bone fragments in his ankle, he's trying to defend his title in one of the millions of leagues captivating America through modern fantasy football, the interactive human poker game started by rotisserie leagues, boosted by ESPN and Yahoo!, and now elevated to that rarefied world of vaguely-legal Internet gambling by FanDuel and DraftKings.com.
And this time it isn’t a 300-pound wall of flesh rushing to crunch his spine.
    It’s worse.
Exploring the fantasy—and the reality—of professional football after you’ve left the field, Fantasy Man is as funny, self-deprecating, and shockingly honest as Slow Getting Up.
