Logline: A basketball star risks his chances at a college scholarship when he competes in a boxing tournament just hours before the big game.
Synopsis: Jack Scratch is the star player for his high school basketball team, on the fast track to a college scholarship and perhaps a career in the NBA.
Jack's journey takes a detour after single mother Janet is saved from a mugger by two boxers: Karl "Sweet Sugar" Brown, a former heavyweight contender who now trains fighters, and Paveli "Punch" Pangora, a Slovenian slugger seeking US citizenship.
After Janet befriends the two boxers, Jack checks out the gritty yet legendary "Sweet’s Sweat Box Gym” for himself. Jack spars with "Bruiser" Bobby Studd, the resident gym bully, and shockingly gets up off the canvas after Studd knocks him down. Despite Bobby's bruising, Jack finds the individual nature of boxing a refreshing challenge after years of carrying his basketball teammates.
Sweet and Punch compete for the role of trainer to Jack as well as a romantic partner to Janet. However, Janet, as well as Jack's basketball coach, "Quick" Rick Steele, see boxing as a harmful distraction from Jack's pursuit of a college basketball scholarship. Mom and Coach are furious because Jack's bruised hands from boxing are affecting his basketball shooting abilities.

Jack, trained by Punch, enters a local boxing tournament and wins his semifinal bout to compete the following week against Bobby, trained by Sweet. However, the boxing tournament finals are scheduled mere hours before the Northeast Classic, an important basketball game that has a direct influence on Jack’s scholarship chances. As Coach Steele warns his star player, "It's your choice, Jack. Make your path, but stick with it. I know you're young, and the world seems like your oyster, but you already got people following your lead, and they need to know which way to head.”
Fight or Play Basketball is a found family story with a backdrop of sports.

Cycling China in the wrong gear and bound for Thailand
In this, the 2nd Audio book of the Rambling On trilogy, the load gets lighter and the speed slower, but Graham Field’s objective remains the same: he is fully focused on making the route to his demise as pleasurable as possible.
And so the quest to his Chinese destiny begins. Now relieved of the whiskey, the road nevertheless continues to be an uphill struggle, not helped by the sub-zero winter temperatures. But being towed behind trucks and loaded on to buses evens out the ratio of endurance and pleasure.
Along the way, Graham proves that, with a little manipulation, a dream can become a reality. Above the suffocating city pollution, he finds a clearer view of China upon a 2,000-year-old trading route through Shangri-La to Tibet. This revered road tempts with a Chinese whisper: an alluring ascent that calls to be ridden in a solitary trance of wonderment.
As the author pushes on, he promises himself, should he reach that pinnacle of personal achievement, the run-off reward will be relaxation. With the descent into Thailand there is a change of gear. The gulf widens as he searches for the perfect beach retreat, refusing to be palmed off as a sex tourist.
One day at a time, that’s how a journey progresses, that’s how a diary is written and a tale is told. It’s far less daunting that way.
This audio book contains bonus outtakes from the recording sessions

Martial arts have a rich history that spans thousands of years, evolving from ancient practices of self-defense and combat into a diverse array of styles and philosophies. The origins of martial arts can be traced to civilizations around the world, with evidence of early techniques and methods seen in ancient Egypt, Greece, China, and India. These practices were often closely tied to the need for survival, whether in warfare or personal defense, and they evolved as cultures exchanged knowledge through trade, conquest, and exploration.
In ancient China, martial arts were deeply influenced by philosophical systems such as Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Practices like Tai Chi and Kung Fu emerged not only as methods of combat but also as ways to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit. Similarly, in Japan, the samurai culture gave rise to martial arts such as Jujutsu, Kendo, and Karate, which emphasized discipline, honor, and respect for one’s opponent. Indian traditions, particularly those rooted in yoga and ancient combat systems like Kalaripayattu, played a significant role in shaping the spiritual and physical elements of martial arts in the region.
Philosophy is central to martial arts, transcending physical techniques to cultivate a way of life. Concepts such as humility, perseverance, and self-control are core to most styles, emphasizing that true mastery lies in the refinement of character rather than in brute strength. Martial arts often teach practitioners to seek balance, both internally and externally, encouraging them to remain calm under pressure and approach conflict with wisdom rather than aggression.
