Synopsis

Inheritance by Edward W. Ludwig begins with a man, a dog, and a world that has gone silent. Martin survives a mysterious catastrophe because he was deep inside a cave when it struck. Emerging days later, he finds abandoned cars along the highway, empty farms, and towns where no one answers. As the evidence mounts, one possibility becomes impossible to ignore: he may be the last human being alive. 
At first, Martin searches desperately for another survivor. Instead, he finds everything civilization left behind—food, automobiles, music, comfortable homes, and entire cities now belonging to no one. With his dog as his only companion, he must decide how to live when there are no jobs, laws, schedules, or people waiting for him. The world he once shared with millions has become his alone. 
Edward W. Ludwig was an American writer whose science fiction appeared throughout the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. He contributed stories to magazines including Fantastic Universe, If, Imagination, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, while also writing mystery and adventure fiction. 
Inheritance takes a familiar end-of-the-world premise and makes it intensely personal. There are no armies or spectacular battles—just one ordinary man walking through what remains, slowly discovering that being the sole heir to civilization may not feel like the gift he first imagined.
