Synopsis

In "From Adam's Peak to Elephanta: Sketches in Ceylon and India," Edward Carpenter artfully intertwines personal reflections with rich ethnographic observations, painting a vivid portrait of the landscapes and cultures of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and India during the late 19th century. His lyrical prose, steeped in Romantic ideals and infused with transcendental influences, captures the geographical beauty and the spiritual essence of the regions he explores. Through a series of sketches, Carpenter addresses social issues, the complexities of colonialism, and the vibrancy of local traditions, offering readers a nuanced understanding of the socio-political context of his travels. Edward Carpenter, a distinguished writer, social reformer, and early advocate for homosexual rights, drew inspiration from his own life experiences and personal inclinations towards spirituality and nature. His travels to Ceylon and India ignited his passionate quest for knowledge and understanding of Eastern philosophies, which greatly influenced his literary work. This book reflects his deep appreciation for the diverse cultures and spiritual practices he encountered, marked by a yearning for a more profound connection with the world. For readers seeking an immersive journey through the enchanting landscapes and rich cultures of the Indian subcontinent, "From Adam's Peak to Elephanta" is an essential read. Angelique is more than a story — it is a vessel of healing, hope, and divine encounter.
Through this powerful journey, you’ll meet a young woman whose life unfolds like a prayer — answered slowly, then all at once. Her path is woven with grace, shaped through brokenness, and emboldened by a relentless pursuit of belonging — not just in the world, but in the heart of God.
Inspired by moments of clarity and struggle from my own walk with Christ, Angelique carries pieces of my testimony while standing as her own unique voice. Her story will resonate with anyone who has questioned their worth, battled loneliness, or longed for freedom.
Let these words speak truth into the quiet places of your heart. May you discover that you are seen, loved, and lifted — not by chance, but by divine design.
Welcome to her story. Welcome to yours.

    Places I've Taken My Body

In seventeen intimate essays, poet Molly McCully Brown explores living within and beyond the limits of a body--in her case, one shaped since birth by cerebral palsy, a permanent and often painful movement disorder.

In spite of--indeed, in response to--physical constraints, Brown leads a peripatetic life: the essays comprise a vivid travelogue set throughout the United States and Europe, ranging from the rural American South of her childhood to the cobblestoned streets of Bologna, Italy. Moving between these locales and others, Brown constellates the subjects that define her inside and out: a disabled and conspicuous body, a religious conversion, a missing twin, a life in poetry. As she does, she depicts vividly for us not only her own life but a striking array of sites and topics, among them Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and the world's oldest anatomical theatre, the American Eugenics movement, and Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. Throughout, Brown offers us the gift of her exquisite sentences, woven together in consideration, always, of what it means to be human--flawed, potent, feeling.
‘These remarkable essays invite us to look long and hard at our own interior landscapes, and to negotiate exterior ones with as much grace and gratitude as we can muster’ Eliza Griswold

'Urgent, compelling and lyrically, luminously beautiful.' Psychologies Magazine

Molly McCully Brown received her MFA from the University of Mississippi, and is a graduate of Stanford University and Simon's Rock of Bard College. She has published poems in Gulf Coast, Image, Kenyon Review, and elsewhere.

Israel’s Day of Independence, Yom Ha’atzmaut, is celebrated on the fifth day of the Hebrew calendar in the month of Iyar. It is immediately preceded by Yom HaZikaron, the Memorial Day for the fallen Israeli soldiers who gave their lives for Israel’s establishment. Emphasis switches from the memorial celebration to the celebration of independence a few minutes after sundown.
The day on which the state of Israel was signed into existence was May 14, 1948. Many important figures in Israeli history played a part in the establishment of the new state, and among the most iconic is the nation’s first female premier, Golda Meir. Known as the “uncrowned queen of Israel” and “Mother Courage,” Meir was an activist for many years, lobbying for a Jewish state in the Mandate of Palestine. She served in numerous capacities before her appointment as Prime Minister and remains one of the most revered Israeli leaders from the pre-state years through the long-sought dream of a Jewish nation.
One of eight children from a poverty-stricken family, she was to become an immigrant to a new land twice in her life. Meir and her parents fled from Kyiv during Russia's antisemitic pogroms in 1905, about a decade after the Dreyfus Affair in France. She grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before rising the ranks back in the Middle East. When it came to Israel and her role in its early years, she noted, "We Jews have a secret weapon in our struggle with the Arabs; we have no place to go."
As in the days of the Biblical Hebrews’ migration out of Egypt under Pharaoh, finding a Jewish homeland meant the adjustment of national boundaries and the displacement of certain neighboring cultures. In the modern age, this has led to several major military conflicts and the need for an ongoing state of readiness within the Israeli military. Meir found herself at the helm of the Yom Kippur War, a time in which Israel was at its most vulnerable.
