Synopsis

In "Some Diversions of a Man of Letters," Edmund Gosse presents a captivating collection of essays that intertwine his reflections on literature, art, and the broader cultural landscape of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Written in a polished, articulate prose characteristic of the period, this work offers readers an intimate glimpse into Gosse's intellectual world, exploring themes of aestheticism, the role of the critic, and the nature of artistic inspiration. The literary style amalgamates personal anecdote with scholarly analysis, reflecting the author's own experiences amidst contemporaneous literary giants, thereby enriching the discourse on the craft of writing itself. Gosse, a notable critic, biographer, and poet, was deeply influenced by his upbringing in a literary family and his exposure to the emerging modernist movements. His associations with prominent figures such as Thomas Hardy and Algernon Charles Swinburne, along with his own polymathic interests, shaped his worldview. "Some Diversions of a Man of Letters" serves as a testament to his keen observations of literary trends and cultural transformations, making it an essential accompaniment to his biographical and critical works. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in literary criticism, as well as those seeking insights into the evolution of British literature during a critical time. Gosse's keen intellect and engaging narrative style not only illuminate the intricacies of literary life but also provoke thoughtful reflections on one's own journey through the written word.

Many American Christians have good intentions, working hard to welcome immigrants with hospitality and solidarity. But how can we do that in a way that empowers our immigrant neighbors rather than pushing them to the fringes of white-dominant culture and keeping them as outsiders? That's exactly the question Karen González explores in Beyond Welcome.

A Guatemalan immigrant, González draws from the Bible and her own experiences to examine why the traditional approach to immigration ministries and activism is at best incomplete and at worst harmful. By advocating for putting immigrants in the center of the conversation, González helps listeners grow in discipleship and recognize themselves in their immigrant neighbors.

Accessible to any Christian who is called to serve immigrants, this book equips listeners to take action to dismantle white supremacy and xenophobia in the church. They will emerge with new insight into our shared humanity and need for belonging and liberation.

It might come as a surprise to some people but there are actually quite a few sex scenes in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. In this episode, we shall dive into 19th-century courtship and how Alcott writes about courtship etiquette. Laurie is based on Alcott's ex and Friedrich to a man she wanted to marry. In this book we will examine Jo's relationships and how they correlate with Alcott's personal life. Louisa May Alcott had a huge crush on her father´s best friend philosopher Waldo Emerson. Louisa wrote love letters to him but she never sent them and she used to sit under his window singing "Migon´s song". Mignon´s song is a song from Goethe´s novel, Wilhelm Meister´s apprenticeship, which was one of Alcott´s favourite books. Emerson was one of the many models for Friedrich. The main model was philosopher Henry Thoreau who merited Louisa´s lifelong affection.

As a long-time, die-hard Little Women fan, I LOVE this podcast! I stumbled upon it while doing research for a book series I was working on, and I am addicted! Niina is super knowledgeable in all things LW, from the book(s) to the movies and author Louisa May Alcott’s real life. I love that the discussions are based on the book and highlight the differences (sometimes controversial) between the original and newer adaptations. Highly recommended for anybody who loves getting lost in the world of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March.
