Beschreibung

"Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West -- the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. It took everybody out of their own little world. The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure. The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it." – John Wayne

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ American Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of America’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Hollywood has produced no shortage of famous movie stars, but none have been as culturally significant as John Wayne. Marion Morrison was born in a quintessentially quaint Midwestern town, but he eventually grew up to become John Wayne, the legend of the silver screen who embodied the Western frontier. Wayne starred in so many movies (nearly 150 in all) that when asked to name his worst, he joked that 50 of them were tied, but the excessive number allowed Wayne to portray heroes of all stripes, from cowboys to soldiers, and he was invariably charming, courageous, and full of rugged, masculine swagger.

Even as Westerns have certainly waned in popularity, Wayne himself has remained immensely popular, in part because he set the prototype for the heroic character, regardless of genre. Wayne will always be associated with Westerns, John Wayne transcended the Western genre. Through the portrayal of rugged, masculine characters, Wayne came to epitomize the American spirit and the way Americans view themselves. In that sense, he is truly America’s actor, and he continues to live on in both the reels of Hollywood's archives and the living rooms of middle America.

At the same time, the central role of John Wayne in defining a big piece of American culture is not without controversy.  His later interview with Playboy magazine is a case in point.  Many Americans today realize that John Wayne's America, though beloved by many, is not the America that everyone calls their own.  Western movies that pay homage to Confederate soldiers and Indian-killing frontiersman and cowboys are not everyone's cup of tea.

American Legends: The Life of John Wayne looks at the iconic actor’s life on and off the silver screen, from his outsized influence to Hollywood to his outspoken views on politics. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about The Duke like you never have before, in no time at all.

In 1965, Ann Dunham was re-married to Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian student from the University of Hawaii. Twelve months later, the new family transferred to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Obama Junior`s half-sister, Maya Soetoro Ng, was born in 1970. A series of incidents in Indonesia left Ann Dunham uncertain of Obama Junior`s safety and education. So, when he was 10, Obama Junior was sent back to Hawaii to live with his maternal grandparents. Ann Dunham and Obama Junior`s step-sister, Maya Soetoro Ng, later joined them. Barack Obama Junior Growing Up As a child, Barack Obama Junior did not have a relationship with his father. “Eloquent, erudite, entertaining, and enlightening, this is a thoughtful meditation on art, creativity, and the human species.” — Terry Fallis, two-time winner of the Leacock Medal for Humour.

Ten Telecaster Tales remakes the idea of the “concept album.” This book about guitar music is arguably the most comprehensive attempt at liner notes in the history of electric instrumental fingerstyle guitar albums.

In his latest offering, Rik Emmett delves into the creative process — the roots, influences, philosophy, and spirituality involved in writing and recording. Even the story behind these stories explores creativity: Emmett dreamed of, then commissioned, a one-of-a-kind Telecaster-style guitar — wrote for it, then recorded with it.

Playfully, beautifully, Ten Telecaster Tales goes on a journey of artistic revelation: The storytelling inherent in solid musical composition translates into an entertaining narrative about the process behind the songs, and how compositions turn into recordings. A generous amount of fairytale mythology is sprinkled throughout — despite the whole project’s assimilation by digital technology. The notion of a “telecaster tale” implies something “vintage” at its heart. Humanity glues the layers together.

Ten Telecaster Tales became the next logical step for Emmett after publishing his memoir, Lay It On The Line. It represents the evolution of his life story into a combination of musical composition, guitar playing, and prose. After all, writing has always been the solid backbone and lifeline of his multifaceted journey.

A U.S. Army Air Corps general recounts his service in the Mediterranean during World War II.“This book richly details life in a fighter squadron. Readers will learn new details and gain a better understanding of the daily experience outside of the intense combat environment. It is well worth reading this contribution to World War II oral history.” —The Journal of America's Military PastOn December six, 1941, despite his objections, James Lynch was discharged from the Army for being over age in grade. After the terrible events at Pearl Harbor, James Lynch was recalled to duty. Within a month he was part of the Air Corps, involved in a secret project to send air support to help General Montgomery and the Eighth Army. He joined the nucleus of officers in charge of the 64th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group. For the next thirty-three months, he fought across the top of Africa and then up through Italy. The 57th Fighter Group arrived in Egypt just in time for the battle at El Alamein. How the United States was able to get the pink-winged P-40s to the battlefield baffled the Germans for many years. The Black Scorpions chased the Afrika Corps across the top of Africa, culminating in the Palm Sunday massacre where the Squadron helped shoot down seventy-four planes in a single engagement. For the Italian campaign, the Black Scorpions switched from P-40s to P-47s, changing from fighters to bombers and disrupting the German and Italian lines up the Italian Peninsula.Through all the battles, including a battle with an erupting Mount Vesuvius, James Lynch kept an unauthorized diary. He also collected daily intelligence reports, newspaper stories, souvenirs, pictures, and letters from home. After the war he reminisced with fellow soldiers about their experiences, and eventually felt it was time to write the story of the Black Scorpions—this book is the result.“One of the most captivating WWII aviation memoirs thus far published.” —ARGunners.com
