Summary

Africa may have given rise to the first human beings, and Egypt probably gave rise to the first great civilizations, which continue to fascinate modern societies across the globe nearly 5,000 years later. From the Library and Lighthouse of Alexandria to the Great Pyramid at Giza, the Ancient Egyptians produced several wonders of the world, revolutionized architecture and construction, created some of the world’s first systems of mathematics and medicine, and established language and art that spread across the known world. With world-famous leaders like King Tut and Cleopatra, it’s no wonder that today’s world has so many Egyptologists.

What makes the accomplishments of the Ancient Egyptians all the more remarkable is that Egypt was historically a place of great political turbulence. Its position made it both valuable and vulnerable to tribes across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and Ancient Egypt had no shortage of its own internecine warfare. Its most famous conquerors would come from Europe, with Alexander the Great laying the groundwork for the Hellenic Ptolemy line and the Romans extinguishing that line after defeating Cleopatra and driving her to suicide.

The World’s Greatest Civilizations: The History and Culture of Ancient Egypt comprehensively covers the history and culture of Ancient Egypt, looking at its religious, political, foreign and military past, and examining all the architectural and artistic achievements from 3,000-30 B.C. Along with historic artwork depicting important people, places, and events, The History and Culture of Ancient Egypt will bring readers up to speed on Ancient Egypt today.

"An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" is a philosophical work written by John Locke in the late 17th century. It is one of the most influential works in the history of Western philosophy and is considered a cornerstone of modern empiricism.
In this book, Locke sets out to explore the nature and limits of human knowledge, arguing that all knowledge is derived from experience, either through our senses or through reflection on our own mental processes. He rejects the idea of innate ideas or knowledge that we are born with, instead proposing that the mind at birth is like a blank slate or "tabula rasa" that is gradually filled with knowledge through experience.
Locke also examines the nature of language and how it relates to our ability to reason and understand the world. He argues that language is essential for human thought and that it shapes the way we perceive and understand the world around us.
Another important aspect of Locke's philosophy is his theory of personal identity. He argues that our sense of self is not based on any underlying substance or soul, but rather on a continuity of consciousness and memory.
Overall, "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding" is a profound and influential work that continues to shape modern philosophical thought. It explores many of the fundamental questions about human knowledge and perception that still occupy philosophers today.

  • North to Boston - Life Histories from the Black Great Migration in New England - cover

North to Boston - Life Histories...

    Blake Gumprecht

Between World War II and 1980, tens of thousands of Black people moved to Boston from the South as part of the Great Migration, one of the most consequential mass movements of people in American history. Black migration from the South transformed the city, as it did urban areas across the country. North to Boston is the first book to examine that important subject.

Blake Gumprecht traces the history of this migration and explores its impacts in greater depth through the lives of ten individuals, each the subject of one chapter. Those chapters are short biographies based on extensive interviews by the author and are told in an engaging style that reflects the author's background as a journalist.

The ten people featured came from six southern states. They fled racism, limited opportunity, and hopelessness, and moved north in pursuit of better jobs, equal treatment, and greater freedom. They settled in neighborhoods such as Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. They worked as teachers, factory workers, welders, and security guards. Their stories are emblematic of the experiences of Black people everywhere who left the South, and provide a rare glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living in one city's Black community.
