“Sic semper tyrannis!” (“Thus, always, to tyrants!”) – attributed to Brutus

Throughout the annals of history, there have been few men as reviled as Marcus Junius Brutus the Younger. To this day, he is associated with murder, betrayal, violence and infamy, so much so that in modern English his name provides the root for the words “brute” and “brutal”, as it does in several other Romance languages. Indeed, Brutus’s reputation was so infamous that when Dante composed his timeless Divine Comedy, he relegated Brutus to the very nethermost depths of Hell. In the Inferno, Dante reaches the pit of the Ninth Circle of Hell, where he finds the Fallen Angel, Lucifer, himself. Lucifer is described as a giant, three-faced demon whose three mouths are perpetually gnashing upon three sinners, widely regarded as being the three most despicable individuals in history. According to Dante, the deepest circle of Hell is reserved for traitors, including Traitors against Kin, Traitors against Homeland, Traitors against Guests, and Traitors against Benefactors. The three men being devoured by Satan in Dante’s Inferno are Judas, the greatest traitor of all, and the two conspirators whose knives cut down Julius Caesar: Gaius Cassius Longinus and Brutus.

By Dante’s logic, Brutus had betrayed both his kin and benefactor, because Caesar had been as a father to him and always treated him with leniency and benevolence. Similarly, he also betrayed his homeland, because his actions helped bring about the downfall of the Republic. Since his appearance in the Inferno, Brutus has proven himself to be a resilient fictional character, naturally appearing as the main antagonist in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, as well as turning up in places as diverse as contemporary novels, the Asterix comic books, and video games. This is hardly surprising, since Brutus was said to be the orchestrator and main perpetrator of the plot against Caesar, and legend had it that it was Brutus himself who dealt the final blow that struck Caesar down. Shakespeare’s “Et tu, brute?” (“And you, Brutus?”) is widely recognized as one of the most iconic lines in theatre, further cementing Brutus’s lurid notoriety, although most of the chronicles dispute whether Caesar actually said anything at all as he died.

Brutus has been history’s most notorious assassin since the Ides of March in 44 B.C., but aside from his conspiracy, the rest of his life is often overlooked, especially his role in the subsequent civil war. In fact, forces loyal to Brutus and the other main conspirator, Cassius, fought one of the biggest battles in Roman history against Octavian and Antony, and it was one that they very nearly won. However, by the end of the decisive battle, Brutus and Cassius had lost, and Brutus had taken his own life. After Octavian rose to power by defeating Antony in yet another civil war, he was able to establish himself as Caesar Augustus, and the Republic that Brutus had hoped to save was truly finished.

Naturally, Augustus ensured that Brutus was universally despised during his reign, and Brutus’s negative reputation mostly persevered over the centuries. But in more modern times, Brutus has undergone something of a rehabilitation. As Western political thought shifted away from the Divine Right of Kings and towards democracy, Brutus began to be viewed in a far more sympathetic light. In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar itself, Brutus is praised as the best of the conspirators, because his motives were described not as being for personal gain but a genuine desire to act for the good of the Republic, however misguided. Later, he became viewed as something of a populist hero, the man who had stood up in defense of a democratic government against a tyrant who wished to seize power for himself alone. Brutus achieved a particularly positive public portrayal in the fledgling United States.

For many years, Camilla was portrayed in a poor light, blamed by the public for the break-up of the marriage between Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Initially, Queen Elizabeth refused to see or speak to her, but, since the death of Prince Philip, Camilla had become one of the Queen's closest companions. Her confidence in Camilla and the transformation she had seen in Prince Charles since their wedding resulted in her choosing the first day of her Platinum Jubilee year to tell the world that she wanted Camilla to be Queen Consort, not the demeaning Princess Consort suggested in 2005.

Angela Levin uncovers Camilla's rocky journey to be accepted by the royal family and how she coped with her brutal portrayal in Netflix's The Crown. The public have witnessed her tremendous contribution to help those in need, especially during COVID. Levin has talked to many of Camilla's long-term friends, her staff, and executives from the numerous charities of which Camilla is patron. She reveals why Camilla concentrates on previously taboo subjects, such as domestic violence and rape. Most of all, Levin tells the story of how Camilla has changed from a fun-loving young woman to one of the senior royals' hardest workers. She has retained her mischievous sense of humor, becoming a role model for older women and an inspiration for younger ones.

"Death, drugs, and the occult meet in grisly inquiry at the Mexican border" in this true crime account of a mass murder by a serial killing cult leader (The New York Times).

When Mark Kilroy vanished while on spring break in Matamoros, Mexico, the search for the missing pre-med student led to a gruesome discovery on a lonely stretch of land called Rancho Santa Elena: a mass grave containing Mark's mutilated corpse along with the remains of thirteen other people. The investigation uncovered how the victims were brutally killed at the hands of drug trafficker and cult leader Adolpho Constanzo, known by his followers as El Padrino, or The Godfather. Constanzo was a serial killer who, along with his followers, tortured and cannibalized innocent people in the barbaric religious ritual of human sacrifice.

In the winter of 1984, Sharon Nicorvo was violently raped while delivering pizza to Fort Monmouth Army Base in New Jersey. At the same time, her seven-year-old son Jay was being subjected to repeated and secret sexual abuse by his babysitter. Best Copy Available delves into these devastating events and their long aftermath. Thirty years later, Nicorvo receives a photocopy of the criminal investigation report documenting that brutal night. This report offers a primer to better understand certain assumptions about class and race; sex and violence; crime and punishment; low and high culture; sanity, madness, and masculinity; and the facsimile nature of the truth. As various American men―some real, some imagined, all prone to violence―move in and then out of their hardscrabble lives, mother and son spend decades avoiding and ultimately confronting what happened to them in that formative year. Most ambitiously, Best Copy Available lends voice to an alternative version of American boyhood, manhood, and fatherhood. One where the sons of deadbeat dads can grow up to be stay-at-home dads, and where our boys and men may realize that the most courageous show of strength is not the determined use of force. It's knowing when and how to ask for help.

In January 1972, my beloved teen brother, Richard, was late coming home from sledding. Extensive searches yielded no indication of Richard’s whereabouts. No one reported seeing or hearing anything that helped. We found no sled, no gloves, no hat…
    And no Richard.
He had vanished without a trace. There was not one solid clue for my parents or the police to investigate. How did life go on after a loved one goes missing? My 11-year-old self was grieved and confused. Was Richard someone’s captive? Was he being hurt? Would the police advocate for Richard? Who could I trust? Who would help? What was now a normal day? Life became insane.
So began an endless cycle of searches, ransom calls, and police investigations. Unanswered questions swirled with dashed hopes to make a slurry of heartache. I blocked out the trauma. The ever-present need for closure left me anxious and angry. I was angry with the police, my parents, myself, and, even God. My faith in Jesus, fragile as a snowflake, had melted.
Did God overlook evil? Did I have to forgive? Who received Mercy? And what about Justice? As I matured, my yearning for these answers actually led me to find Jesus as Lord. Together we traversed these faith-crushing questions to glean true faith.
Despite years of living in the traumatic chaos of an unsolved crime against my family, I found answers in Jesus. I hope my journey of faith will inspire you to find God’s Goodness. His Love never fails.

A touching, funny, heart-wrenching, and triumphant memoir from one of the biggest names in radio, the host of The Bobby Bones Show, one of the most listened-to drive time morning radio shows in the nation.
Growing up poor in Mountain Pine, Arkansas, with a young, addicted mom, Bobby Estell fell in love with country music. Abandoned by his father at the age of five, Bobby saw the radio as his way out—a dream that came true in college when he went on air at the Henderson State University campus station broadcasting as Bobby Bones, while simultaneously starting The Bobby Bones Show at 105.9 KLAZ. Bobby’s passions were pop, country music, and comedy, and he blended the three to become a tastemaker in the country music industry, heard by millions daily. Bobby broke the format of standard country radio, mixing country and pop with entertainment news and information, and has interviewed some of the biggest names in the business, including Luke Bryan, Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, and Jason Aldean.
Yet despite the glamour, fame, and money, Bobby has never forgotten his roots, the mom and grandmother who raised him, the work ethic he embraced which saved him and encouraged him to explore the world, and the good values that shaped him. In this funny, poignant memoir told in Bobby’s distinctive patter, he takes fans on a tour of his road to radio. Bobby doesn’t shy away from the curves he continues to navigate—including his obsessive-compulsive disorder—on his journey to find the happiness of a healthy family.
Funny and tender, raw and honest, Bare Bones is pure Bobby Bones—surprising, entertaining, inspiring, and authentic.
