Beschreibung

The purpose of this book is to chronicle the journey and experiences of two people who came to be known as missionaries. They were ordinary people -- from ordinary places -- And they followed the most extraordinary God. May those who read these pages be inspired to listen to and act upon the call of this same God, the Father of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in their own lives. To God be the glory.

"Love is patient, love is kind, love is . . ." The words are so familiar they almost lack meaning, a Christianese version of "live, laugh, love." Even non-Christians are familiar with the Love Chapter of 1 Corinthians, read at weddings, painted on decorative signs, and preached regularly from the pulpit. But what happens when these verses are taken seriously? What would it take for someone to live out the Love Chapter as literally as possible?

That was the question Kim Sorrelle set out to answer during her yearlong experiment. Using 1 Corinthians 13 as a road map, she focused on one phrase at a time, seeking to understand its true meaning and how it could motivate every daily action. And she didn't just look at the best-known parts of the passage but also the ones we don't think too deeply about: love does not boast, does not dishonor others, doesn't keep a record of wrongs, and more.

In her attempts to live the Love Chapter to the letter, Kim journeyed all the way to Haiti, where she met people who both tested and displayed love to its limits. From irritating employees to sexist short-term missionaries to curse-wielding women to the profoundly kind nuns, her encounters are filled with rueful self-reflection and comical commentary, as well as a new understanding of the nuances and power of true love in action.

Throughout Leviticus, Israel remains encamped at Mount Sinai while God appears in the Tent of Meeting, dictating to Moses his specifications regarding the Jewish ceremonial laws. The laws are extremely detailed, outlining every aspect of how and when religious offerings are to be presented to God. God gives the instructions himself, and his voice comprises the majority of the text. A brief narrative interlude describes the anointing of Aaron and his sons as Israel’s priests. At the ceremony, God appears and engulfs the altar in a burst of flames, eliciting shouts of joy from the people. Soon after, God also sends fire to consume two of Aaron’s sons when they neglect to make the right preparations for approaching the altar.

How you perceive God's hand towards you can be the deciding factor on whether you see Him as a mildly interested, passive-aggressive being; a cosmic superpower that is so distant and uninvolved in your life you could never be close to Him; a cruel, cold judge ready to bop you over the head with a lightning bolt the moment you screw up; or perhaps, an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving Creator who is a Father at heart—one who reaches down to outcasts and desires to comfort, heal, restore, and empower. He’s an ever-pursuing, ever-giving, ever-reaching God who knows you, loves you, and actually wants you! He doesn’t see you as replaceable, He sees you as embraceable. You need to see yourself this way too!Could it be that when He extends His righteous right hand towards us, He’s not just rescuing us, He’s initiating something deeply beautiful? We can behold His hand and take hold of all He has for us! We can experience His character, His glory, His might, His power, and ultimately lock eyes with His eyes of fire. Once one truly catches His gaze, the game is over for compromise, complacency, and the bored fog that has hovered over the minds of this generation, lulling us into a sleepy stupor of powerless living. Will you dare to take hold?

Meditations on Why Life is Worth Living
We aren't always honest about how difficult normal human life is.
For the majority of people, sorrow, despair, anxiety, and mental illness are everyday experiences. While we have made tremendous advancements in therapy and psychiatry, the burden of living still comes down to mundane choices that we each must make—like the daily choice to get out of bed.
    In these pages, you'll find

    - Alan Noble's deeply personal yet universally relatable consideration of the unique burden of everyday life,
    - Insight that offers hope and challenge without minimizing the reality of ordinary suffering, grief, and mental illness, and
    - Noble's ultimate conclusion that the choice to carry on amid great suffering—to simply get out of bed—is itself a powerful witness to the goodness of life, and of God.
