Beschreibung

This week’s issue features two classic novels. First up: Feathers Left Around, by Carolyn Wells, a classic Fleming Stone mystery. When a woman is found dead after a séance, clues point in strange directions—feathers, fingerprints, and ghostly warnings—but the truth is firmly grounded in the logic of a clever killer. For fantasy fans, we have Marigold, by Edith Allonby, a followup to last issue’s Jewel Sowers. Originally published in 1905, Marigold a bold fantasy-satire. The story follows a schoolteacher transported to the planet Lucifram, where she encounters a bizarre society that mirrors and mocks our own.

This week’s short stories are just as diverse. Robert Lopresti’s “The Trouble with Lucy” is a quiet, devastating tale of choices, consequences, and the price of guilt. Celebrating National Ice Cream Day (the third Sunday in July), John M. Floyd’s “Brain Food” has Sheriff Lucy Valentine juggling fugitives, cranky townsfolk, and her meddling mother—with the help of some ice cream and sharp wits.

Michael Bracken’s “Schrödinger’s Blonde” is a noir-tinged mystery with a haunting hook: a decades-old photo of a vanished girl—and the detective hired to learn the truth. Larry Hodges gives us “Thirty-five Genie Heads on a Wall,” a wildly inventive story about revenge, responsibility, and the consequences of wish-granting gone wrong.

In Hannah Shearer’s Here Be Dragons, a stubborn dragon—and a stubborn woman—turn an unexpected standoff into a wry tale of self-rescue, chronic pain, and independence. “The Immortality Shot” by Andrew Kozma is a quietly unsettling piece about scientific ambition and human frailty. And E.C. Tubb’s “Upstairs” is a heartbreaking tale of space-school ambition and personal failure—where the real tragedy isn’t who fails to graduate, but why they were expected to succeed.

Here’s the complete lineup—

This knife-edge psychological thriller set in the entertainment hotbed of Atlanta delivers a gripping, twisty tale of one psychologist and six talented but dangerously toxic clients who push her to her own vulnerable limits—and maybe beyond—with cruel and unexpected consequences.

Dr. Victoria Benning knows it’s unethical to discuss the therapy sessions of her clients, but the drama of their unpredictable lives tests her professional role like never before.

First, she counsels Mrs. Melody, a brutally honest, gorgeous rap artist who relies on sexual leverage with men to elevate her music career. … Then there’s Charles Clay, a hot young film director and master manipulator with a fetish for opportunistic women. … Tyrell Hodge is a frustrated screenwriter, part-time driver, and full-time complainer who desperately needs a break. … Dark & Moody is a music producer who prays for a blood sacrifice in order to succeed. … Joseph Drake, a venture capitalist from a powerful, slave-ownership family, now suffers from a spell of White guilt. … And Destiny Flowers is a hopeless dreamer who struggles to keep her mouth and mind at peace—while harassing the tolerant doctor she hopes will ultimately help her.

Working around the clock, Dr. Benning observes a troubling, treacherous common denominator that plagues all six clients: a desperate impulse to grasp control of everything and everyone in their lives—no matter the cost. It’s a struggle withwhich she’s all too familiar. Determined to head-off tragedy, she comes up with a brilliant game plan to make their collective talents work in everyone’s favor. …

A gritty, explosive gangland thriller from TOP 20 BESTSELLER Owen Mullen
Family first. Family last. The Glass family always...
Charley Glass arrived in her family’s lives like the hurricane she'd escaped. But she hadn't run far enough: the ruthless Giordano family are on her tail and want two things - her life, and the return of the property she stole from them. No matter how many bodies stack up.
After years of hoping, Charley finally has the family she’s always wanted, but now she’s going to have to tell them the real reason she came looking for them. There is only one way she’s going to stay alive, and that is to employ the muscle of the notorious Glass Family.
The head of the family, Luke, isn't sure they're strong enough to take on one of New Orleans' biggest crime gangs. But he'd put his life on the line to protect the empire they've built - even if they’ll have to take on an enemy hurting enough to cross an ocean for revenge.
Page-turning, gritty, and utterly compelling. Perfect for fans of Martina Cole, Kimberley Chambers and Mandasue Heller.

A murdered recluse. A property empire. A disinherited family. All the ingredients for murder.

No one gave much credence to the man when he was alive. In fact, most people never knew who he was, although those who had lived in the area for many years recognized the tired-looking and shabbily dressed man as he shuffled along, regular as clockwork on Thursdays at seven in the evening to the local off-license.

It was always the same: a bottle of whisky, premium brand, and a packet of cigarettes. He paid his money over the counter, took hold of his plastic bag containing his purchases, and then walked back down the road with the same rhythmic shuffle. He said not one word to anyone on the street or in the shop.

Apart from the three-story mansion where he lived, one of the best residences on one of the best streets in London, with its windows permanently shuttered, no one would have regarded him as any other than homeless and destitute. Just a harmless eccentric, until the morning when he was found dead in his front garden.
