Beschreibung

Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque Vol. 2" embodies the quintessential characteristics of Gothic literature, deftly blending elements of horror, fantasy, and psychological depth. This collection showcases Poe's mastery in short story form, offering a tapestry of grotesque images and arabesque structures that provoke a visceral response from the reader. From the dark humor of "The Devil in the Belfry" to the nightmarish terror of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," Poe challenges the boundaries of reality and delves into the labyrinth of the human psyche, exploring themes of death, madness, and the irrational fears that haunt us all. The stories are richly textured, employing intricate symbolism and a morbid fascination that reflect the Romantic era's obsession with the macabre and the sublime. Edgar Allan Poe, a pioneer of literary criticism and the detective fiction genre, was profoundly influenced by personal tragedies and a tumultuous life marked by loss and despair. These experiences informed his exploration of themes such as obsession and the darker aspects of human nature, leading to his creation of a unique narrative style that captivates even today. His contributions to literature established him as a significant figure in American Romanticism and paved the way for future writers. "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque Vol. 2" is an essential read for those intrigued by the psychological complexities of fear and the aesthetic of the grotesque. Poe's ability to evoke deep emotional responses through his vivid storytelling makes this collection a vital exploration of the human condition, perfect for scholars and casual readers alike who seek to understand the intricate dance between beauty and horror.

A collection of G.M.Hague's first three "Paranormal Tales" novellas, this brings together classic horror and traditional ghost stories into a full-length book that will keep you awake long into the night and leaving the lights on. In "Death Wish" a woman fervently wishes her adored husband wasn't dead - and gets far more than she wanted. "The Girl in the Back Seat" is a cautionary tale about picking up hitchhikers. Teenage girls can be difficult, especially when their unhappy spirits become obsessed with the living. "Footprints in the Snow" shows that war can be hell in an entirely different way. The strange abbey in the forest can never be a sanctury for anyone.
These three stories have everything for the true horror fan - ghosts, zombies, and terrifying mysteries from beyond the grave.

Mary Amelia St. Clair was born on the 24th August 1863 in Rock Ferry, Cheshire.

Her father was a Liverpool shipowner who, after being made bankrupt, became an alcoholic and died whilst May was still a child. The family then moved to Ilford, just outside London and, after a solitary year of education, May was required to stay home and help look after her older brothers, four of whom were suffering from fatal congenital heart disease.

Despite this difficult start May was determined to pursue a literary career. From 1896 May wrote professionally to support herself and her mother. By the turn of the century she was producing not only poetry volumes but short stories, novels and some non-fiction. She was an active feminist and supporter of the Suffrage Movement, her literary talents help to shred ideas that the suffragists were driven by sexual frustration because of the shortage of men.

Her 1913 novel ‘The Combined Maze’, the story of a London clerk and the two women he loves, was highly praised by many, including George Orwell, while Agatha Christie considered it one of the greatest English novels of its time.

In 1914, she volunteered to join the Munro Ambulance Corps on the Western Front in Flanders. Although her time there was short-lived the experience was later reflected in both prose and poetry.

She published several poetry volumes as well as writing early criticism on Imagism and several poets of the movement. Her novels were now also influenced by modernist techniques and her supernatural short stories are increasingly seen as valuable additions to the genre.

From the late 1920s, she suffered from the onset of Parkinson's disease, and her writing career was effectively over.

May Sinclair died on the 14th November 1946. She was 83 and buried at St John-at-Hampstead's churchyard, London.
