Synopsis

First in an epic trilogy that begins in the antebellum South, where a swindler and a group of runaway slaves fight against an evil plantation owner’s legacy.   1859. When his latest business venture goes bust, Durksen Hurst finds himself on the run from a mob—and in the last place he ever wanted to be: Turkle, Mississippi. In the thirty years since Hurst had been there, a lot has changed. The only plantation that has survived is the one owned by the French family. Missus Marie Brussard French runs her dominion with a strong hand and an iron will, never giving her son, Devereau, the authority and independence he so desperately craves. And now their power faces its greatest threat . . .   Hurst has pitched a new scheme to a group of runaway slaves he encountered. He’ll make them freedmen and partners on the plantation he’s dreamed of building. All Hurst has to do is pull two deadly swindles: get a Chickasaw chief to sign over the land, and convince a government agent to transform the document into a deed.   But the Frenches have their own secrets to hide—and don’t need a rival landowner threatening their hold on the town. The appearance of a beautiful and mysterious woman only adds fuel to the fire. And as rumors of a civil war swirl throughout the South, the fight between Hurst and the Frenches turns into a battle neither can afford to lose . . .   “The action and drama are compelling from the first page to the exciting conclusion.” —Historical Novel Society

Job hunting is a deadly sport.
Deandra “Dee” Hendricks is settling into her new life in Axia. She’s got her trusty baby dragon, Havoc, by her side; is sharing an apartment with her best friend and roommate, Wendy; and even has her first pet-sitting client. Things are looking up!
Shortly after launching her new website, Dee receives an invitation to a pet-sitter happy hour where she meets Sarah, the owner of Axia’s largest pet-sitting operation. Other attendees include sole proprietors, like Dee, and a few of Sarah’s employees. Everyone is welcoming and willing to share advice—mainly to steer clear of their notorious fellow sitter, Lydia Monroe.
They accuse Lydia of everything—from magically manipulating her animal charges and poaching clients from Sarah to making false claims about possessing “zoolingual” abilities. The sticking point is Lydia’s questionable acquisition of a lucrative gig offered by Oleander Basnet, a yeti whose son needs one-on-one care. Sarah’s company fought hard for the opportunity, only to have yet another job snatched away by Lydia.
The peaceful get-together is interrupted when a late arrival informs the group that Lydia has been found murdered. Worse still, the time of death doesn’t exonerate anyone at the event. Dee fears she’s just shared discounted appetizers with a murderer.
Later that night, a job offer from Oleander hits Dee’s inbox. Dee’s wallet desperately wants her to take the job, but could there be someone in town so desperate to beat the competition that they murdered Lydia? And could Dee be next?

Honoré de Balzac was born on the 20th May, 1799 in the French city of Tours into an upper middle class family.

At birth Balzac was wet-nursed and often then schooled away from home by parents who seemed remote. So difficult was life that at 15 he attempted suicide. The family’s intention was for him to have a career in law but Balzac preferred literature. An avid reader, he began writing but his early attempts showed little promise.

He thereafter settled in Paris and began to publish anonymously across political, philosophical, and historical novels.

In 1825, Balzac purchased a printing house. He was soon bankrupt and forced to return to writing in order to reduce his debts. But his literary fortunes had changed, and his writing was now to achieve considerable success. He was accepted among the city’s literary élites and its salons and would play an important role in establishing the copyright law in France.

Balzac often worked on more than one project at a time and in his magnus opus ‘The Human Comedy’ all types of texts were collected to offer a rare narrative of different classes and social stereotypes of society. For many Balzac is considered the father of French realism, yet his works also cover philosophical and psychological questions. His writing was a fundamental source of inspiration for many distinguished and later writers such as Flaubert, Zola and Proust.

Balzac also tried his hand at magazine publication with ‘La Chronique de Paris’ and ‘La Revue Parisienne.’ Although he was partnered with others such as Victor Hugo, it was another complete financial failure.

As a committed Catholic, Balzac’s stories also dealt with themes of mysticism, esotericism and spirituality, as well as universality and humanism.

In politics, he was a staunch defender of the French Crown but unlike his contemporaries he was not an implacable enemy of the republicans. He often presented disagreements between royalists and republicans as a tolerable difference in political opinion.

Despite many relationships Balzac married only towards the end of his life and it was in 1833 that he met the Polish Countess Hanska, who only became his wife 17 years later after an extensive relationship by correspondence and, by then, his health was ruinously bad.

Honoré de Balzac died on 18th August 1850 in Paris. He was 51.
