Synopsis

E. W. Hornung's "A Thief in the Night: A Book of Raffles' Adventures" presents a captivating collection of short stories that chronicles the escapades of the notorious gentleman thief, A.J. Raffles. Infused with Edwardian charm, Hornung employs a witty and engaging prose style, blending elements of mystery, humor, and adventure, while exploring themes of morality and social stratification. The literary context is significant, emerging from the late Victorian period, where notions of propriety and crime were deeply intertwined, thus reflecting society's fascination with antiheroes and the duality of the criminal mind. E.W. Hornung, an accomplished author and playwright, was notably inspired by his close relationship with Arthur Conan Doyle, whose Sherlock Holmes stories laid the groundwork for the detective fiction genre. As Doyle's brother-in-law, Hornung's grasp of narrative intricacies and character development can be traced to this literary lineage. His choice to create Raffles, an amiable rogue, reveals an exploration of the allure of the criminal archetype against the backdrop of a rigidly structured society. Readers will find "A Thief in the Night" an exquisite blend of suspense and sophistication, perfect for those who enjoy tales of cunning escapades dripping with humor and wit. This book not only entertains but also invites contemplation on the complexities of human nature and the fine line between right and wrong.

"The Adventure of the Norwood Builder", one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the second tale from The Return of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1903 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by "the unhappy John Hector McFarlane", a young lawyer from Blackheath who has been accused of murdering one of his clients, a builder called Jonas Oldacre. McFarlane explains to Holmes that Oldacre had come to his office only a day earlier and asked him to draw up his will in legal language. McFarlane saw, to his surprise, that Oldacre was making him the sole beneficiary and even heir to a considerable bequest, and McFarlane cannot imagine why Oldacre would do so. That business took McFarlane to Oldacre's house in Lower Norwood, where some documents had to be examined for legal purposes. They had been kept in the safe, where the murder allegedly took place. McFarlane left quite late and stayed at a local inn. He claims to have read about the murder in the newspaper the next morning on the train. The paper said quite clearly that the police were looking for him.

In 1934, a young José Revueltas traveled to Tamaulipas to support the cotton workers' strike in Estación Camarón, which became the basis of his landmark novel Human Mourning. In her own groundbreaking novel, Autobiography of Cotton, Cristina Rivera Garza recounts her grandparents' journey from mining towns to those same cotton fields as it intersects with Revueltas's life in a vivid and evocative history of cotton cultivation along the Mexico-United States border.Through archival research and personal narrative, Rivera Garza chronicles the way cotton transformed the borderlands by reconstructing the cotton workers' strike and reveals how cycles of deprivation and ecocide persist across generations. Deeply personal and politically acute, Rivera Garza crafts a new kind of border novel that tells how a brittle land radically altered her grandparents' lives and the territories they helped develop. An intimate fictionalization, Autobiography of Cotton reveals a rich social history of agricultural colonization, labor activism, environmental degradation, and cross-border migration.
