Sinossi

Before the ballet, there was the book—and it's more magical and mysterious than you ever imagined.

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann is the enchanting tale of young Marie Stahlbaum, who receives a wooden nutcracker as a Christmas gift—only to discover it holds the key to a fantastical world of toy soldiers, clockwork wonders, and an epic battle against the wicked Mouse King.

Far darker and richer than its ballet adaptation, Hoffmann's original 1816 tale blends whimsy with gothic wonder, capturing both the innocence of childhood and the surreal fears that live in the imagination.

This illustrated and annotated edition includes historical context, restored narrative details, and charming period artwork—ideal for readers of all ages during the holiday season or any time of year.

"The original Nutcracker is a dreamlike fairytale with shadows and sparkles." — The New York Review of Books
"A masterpiece of romantic fantasy—strange, beautiful, and unforgettable." — The Guardian

Who’s story is this? Nobody. - Who’s nobody? The average working man.
This story is very old but very relevant. The common man’s opinions are disregarded. His needs are manipulated. But of course the story makes clear that he is key to society.
The story shows that. Then the narrator comes in and rather dramatically reinforces that point in the final three paragraphs just in case you missed it the first time. Yes, there’s a pretty high soapbox. Yes, it’s pretty holier than thou. But hey, it’s Christmas time. What’s so funny ‘bout peace, love and understanding, anyway? And that’s quite a trick on Dickens’s part.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

AFTER THE RACE: The cars came scudding in towards Dublin, running evenly like pellets in the groove of the Naas Road. At the crest of the hill at Inchicore sightseers had gathered in clumps to watch the cars careering homeward and through this channel of poverty and inaction the Continent sped its wealth and industry.
