Sinopse

This novel was originally published under the title A Daughter of the Marionis and was reprinted several times. The story of a vendetta, makes a capital plot for the novelist who takes characters from Southern life for his story, and in Margharita, “a daughter of the Marionis,” we have a not impossible character. She does not appear till late in the story, but takes up the vendetta of her uncle with a will. Marionis himself is a fine figure, and the scene when, having been let out of prison an old man, he seeks to resume his scheme of vengeance, and visits the degenerate committee of the “White Hyacinth Society” is full of stern pathos. The struggle Margharita has between love and hatred is also well described, and the interest in the story is never allowed to flag, and it continues absorbing to the end.

Why settle for nothing, when you can steal everything?
Forget banks, casinos, museums—society’s most valuable treasure sits in the giant, anonymous data centers that power modern life. There, in endless rows of hard drives, lies the sum of our civilization’s knowledge, all of the world’s personal and private truths, uploaded and saved. They wait unseen, unexploited, and, most critically, unguarded.
Tim is a climate journalist disillusioned with chronicling the end of the world. Virginia is an evasive, paranoid, and technologically savvy con artist who has found an ingenious way to live off the grid in the heart of Manhattan. Joined by desire and desperation, they hatch a plan to steal secrets. But they have secrets of their own—secrets they can’t tell each other, secrets that could destroy them both . . .
With their last few dollars and some dime store wigs, they set out for the outskirts of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the unlikely site of the world’s largest repository of knowledge—a data center the size of a small city—to attempt a brazen heist that, whether they fail or succeed, will change their lives forever.
But the heist is only the beginning.
From the award–winning author Nathaniel Rich, Cloudthief is a heist novel for a new era, in which the most valuable things in life are virtual, privacy is a sick joke, and security is relative. After all is lost, what remains?

In the twenty-second century, the GPC has convinced the government to severely cut budgets and programs, creating an underclass of many of its poor and working-class citizens. It is now the year 2108. The haves and the have-nots live in totally separate communities and with no real contact, aside from the soldiers who guard the perimeter that runs between them.
Penitentiaries that used to house criminals, mental institutions, and charities (welfares) are relics of the past. Either you are an asset to Haven’s society or you are thrown to the “other side,” never to return.
David Stuart is determined to make a difference to help the “discards” after he secretly slipped food in through the perimeter and created a bond with one of them. His life will never be the same once he encounters the horrors of Haven’ot.

It is winter in the Cotswolds and a suspicious death has occurred. Psychic medium ‘Madame Zelda’ is found dead on Christmas morning, an open box of chocolates by her side. DCI Hayley Pascal and her new oppo, DS Artie Frobisher, have little to occupy themselves over the dead time that is Christmas at Oxford Police Station, until the chocolates are found to contain a poisonous substance. Cold cases can wait. They now have a new case to solve: one of MURDER.
There are no shortage of suspects: the victim’s feckless husband Charlie, her simple-minded son Luke and Grant Vaughan, the man she has cut out of his mother’s will. Added to these complications, Hayley Pascal is missing her daughter, who lives with her ex-husband in Paris and who has promised to visit her at New Year, but doesn’t. Here is a straightforward murder mystery in the tradition of Agatha Christie, but it is also a story of ordinary people driven to drastic measures through loneliness, misery and the need for revenge.

Flatlands is believable and complex. This story ranks with the classic depictions of the marvel that was the Old West, that great, vanished moment in history; within its strong atmosphere of reality, fiction intertwines with known facts of the time. This novel is a study in the strength of interaction between individuals of the same family or group, and explores stress and loyalty in the face of hostile odds.

Flatlands rewards the reader with rich insight into character and situation. Its individual tune interrupts shock and sorrow with irresistible laughter. A gripping original.
