She exposes both the harsh truths and the exciting adventures of her years in the airline industry as a commercial pilot, reveals compelling insider details of 9/11, of the Tenerife air disaster killing 583 people, of the Gulf War and much more. Experience what life is truly like in the cockpit and how it has changed from the 80s to today, from the eyes of a woman and heart of a mother.

Affectionately known as the Queen Mother, she was born a commoner and never expected to be Queen. Yet, her life was forever changed with the abdication of her brother-in-law, Edward VIII, and she rose to become one of the most popular royal figures.

Helen Cathcart's fascinatingly intimate account charts the life of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, from her birth and early years, to her courtship and marriage to the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, through the abdication crisis, and later period as Queen consort, before giving insight into the first forty years of her life as Queen Mother after her daughter, Elizabeth II, had ascended to the throne.

During her long life the Queen Mother witnessed numerous challenges to her nation, including two world wars and the decline of British power, yet, as Cathcart reveals, she remained an unwavering pillar of support to both her husband and her daughter through these difficult times.

Drawing information from family letters, royal journals, and the personal recollections, The Queen Mother is an exceptionally detailed picture of one of the most influential women of the twentieth century.

Three young Jewish sisters from Leipzig, Germany huddle together in the cold darkness of night waiting for their smugglers to rescue them and bring them to freedom in Belgium. Their mother, in a state of shock following Kristallnacht, is left behind, sedated in a psychiatric hospital. November 1938 begins the four year ordeal of the seven member Kroch family who endure unfathomable conditions in their fight for survival: imprisonment in French internment camps, hiding in a tiny tool shed, and adapting to the deplorable conditions of a Nazi prison. The memoirs of Alexandra, age eleven, and her sisters, fifteen year old Eva and fourteen year old Judith, interweave as they recount the true story of their escape from the Nazis.

Leaving behind their life of luxury, the girls describe unimaginable hunger, deprivation, and fear. Family love, music, and the close friendship of strangers are the essential ingredients that sustain them through the hardships they face. A narrative backdrop threads through the story, providing the socio-political context. From a historical perspective and from the three sisters' witness accounts, the listener will come to understand the progression of antisemitism in Germany and France, the course by which Hitler dismantled democracy, the role France adopted as Nazi collaborators, and how the Swiss policies towards Jews were executed.

    19th Century-Authors - Edgar...

This is a compilation of 3 different titles, which are about the following topics:
1: Charles Dickens is often remembered because of his Christmas Carol. And even though that is a very interesting novel, it wasn’t even his favorite. Some artists and authors claim that a work of art or a novel should be completely separated from the creator. Personally, I completely disagree. I think you can always find traces of psychology in a person’s work that are related to the things they experienced in their personal lives. And so, without further ado, I encourage you to pick up this short informational book. It will lay out some of the most important characters from his most famous novels and give you the background you need to understand the motives and creativity behind them.
2: Perhaps you have heard of Edgar Allan Poe. Perhaps not. Either way, this 19th-century author has received quite some fame for his works and his unique style. His mystery and gruesome horror stories, comedy, and other genres have reached far into the depths of American literature. Edgar Allan Poe had a life, a background worth studying. His experiences have led him to his career success, his published works, and many other honors.
3: Oscar Wilde was a wild one. His statements were bold, his career was successful, and his tongue was sharp. Not only did he disturb the common narrative of the nuclear family, the Catholic church, and the idea of patriotism, but he also blew many people away with his defense of his principles, his criticism on the state, philosophies on life itself, and more. Being open about being a homosexual in a time when it was unaccepted and even illegal, his life ended in imprisonment and exile. Yet, despite his orientation and his controversial preferences, his prose and poetry did not suffer. His travels through Europe taught him many fascinating lessons, which he expressed in his acting, his writing, etc.
