Beschreibung

Whether at home or abroad, communicating with people of other cultures is difficult. It requires new ways of thinking and interpreting the world. When conflict arises, as it often does, the issues become even more confusing. Without a good understanding of how different cultures handle conflict, our best intentions may only make matters worse.
With a particular focus on Asian and Hispanic cultures (at home and around the world) and on African culture, Duane Elmer walks readers through various types of conflict and shows how they can be handled effectively and appropriately. Elmer gives numerous stories and examples from his experience and from others' to show how handling conflict well builds solid relationships. With an eye out for biblical principles, he looks at a variety of sticky questions in Scripture. This is a book not just of theory but of practical models of conflict resolution.
Pastors, evangelists, business people, missionaries, students--anyone who wants to communicate more effectively with neighbors and colleagues--will find this book immensely helpful.

In terms of geopolitics, perhaps the most seminal event of the Middle Ages was the successful Ottoman siege of Constantinople in 1453. The city had been an imperial capital as far back as the 4th century, when Constantine the Great shifted the power center of the Roman Empire there, effectively establishing two almost equally powerful halves of antiquity’s greatest empire. Naturally, the Ottoman Empire would also use Constantinople as the capital of its empire after their conquest effectively ended the Byzantine Empire.
In the wake of taking Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire would spend the next few centuries expanding its size, power, and influence, bumping up against Eastern Europe and becoming one of the world’s most important geopolitical players. It was a rise that would not truly start to wane until the 19th century. In fact, its decline would be brought about not just because of military setbacks and government corruption, but also because of nationalist uprisings among its multiethnic territories. The fact that the other existing multicultural empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, also did not survive World War I makes clear just how hard governing such a vast expanse of land can be. The Ottoman Empire’s inability to create a shared identity, a weak central state, and growing inner dissensions were some of the main factors explaining its long demise.
Of course, before that demise, the Ottomans brought plenty of their own cultural influence to the lands they reached, and nowhere is that more evident than in the spread of Islam. While Ottoman conflicts with European powers were often portrayed as religious conflicts, the fact is that the Ottomans managed to bring Islam with them into parts of Europe, especially the Balkans, and Islam took hold in various regions, adding even more demographic complexity to a place that already had no shortage of it.

    Read by the author.
Life is not easy, but it's more difficult when we just put our head down, ignore everything and everyone around us, and try to push through till we get to the other side. Identifying the reasons we don't ask for help is the first step toward making real change and experiencing all that God has for us.
In The Bumpy Road to Better bestselling author and senior pastor of Celebration Church, Tim Timberlake, confronts head-on the human tendency to dodge the difficult and hide from the hard. He explains how an obsession with quick fixes, instant gratification, and a trouble-free existence holds us back from gaining wisdom and experiencing transformation. There is great power hidden in the things we are trying to avoid.
The road to growth and greatness is rarely smooth or easy, but it's taking us where we need to go. Tim takes a practical approach to the topic by unpacking thirty unique "hard things" that everyone must face and opening our eyes to the positive results they can bring. With his characteristic blend of storytelling, biblical principles, and down-to-earth applications, Tim walks readers through the intricacies of each of these challenging realities, includingdifficult conversations, uncomfortable delays, hurtful criticism, andpainful sacrifices.

The goal is not to simply grit our teeth and survive the discomfort. It's to embrace the challenges, be changed by them, and receive the gifts they offer. What we really want in life is usually found on the other side of obstacles we'd rather avoid. On the other side of pain is progress, and on the other side of bumps is something better. If we're going to live freely in Christ and experience the abundant life He promises, we must be willing to be uncomfortable. There is no other way.

A Curious Faith - The Questions...

God created us curious. We innately wonder about the world, one another, ourselves, and God. But technology, fear of the unknown, cultural taboos, or even church leaders can smother our curiosity.
Popular writer Lore Ferguson Wilbert has belonged to Christian communities that discouraged curiosity. The point of the Christian life was to have the right answers, and asking questions reflected a wavering faith. But Wilbert came to discover that the Bible is a permission slip to anyone who wants to ask questions.

Reflecting her own theological trajectory toward a more contemplative, expansive faith, Wilbert invites listeners to foster curiosity as a spiritual habit. This book explores questions God asks us, questions we ask God, and questions we ask each other. Christianity is not about knowing good answers, says Wilbert, but about asking good questions—ones that foster deeper intimacy with God and others.

A Curious Faith invites listeners to go beyond pat answers and embrace curiosity, rather than certainty, as a hallmark of authentic faith. Foreword by Seth Haines.
