“Read him.” — George Elliott Clarke, author of I & I and George and Rue

An award-winning author goes looking for the meaning of family and belonging on a glorious wild-goose-chase road trip across middle America

Wangersky’s great-great-grandfather crossed the continent in search of gold in 1849. William Castle Dodge was his name, and he was 22 years old. He wrote a diary of that eventful journey that comes into the author’s hands 160 years later. And typically, quixotically, Wangersky decides to follow Dodge’s westward trail across the great bulging middle of America, not in search of gold but something even less likely: that elusive thing called family.

What ensues becomes this story, by turns hilarious and profound, about a very long trip — by car, in Wangersky’s case, and on mule and foot in Dodge’s. Interweaving his experiences on the road with Dodge’s diary, the author contemplates the human need to hunt for roots and meaning as he — and Dodge — encounter immigrants who risk everything to be somewhere else, while only glimpsing those who are there already and who want to hold onto their claim in the stream of human migration.

Same Ground is a story about what time washes away and what persists — and what we might find, unexpectedly, if we go looking.

"Waters of the Sanjan is fiction based on fact, woven around the life of a known (Masai) warrior who lived at the turn of the century. It is an historical novel and the events portrayed were not unusual in the life of a warrior of those times. The customs and traditions are accurate; the places where events took place are real places and to date still go by the same name the Waters of the Sanjan, translated literally, Inkariak-oo-Sanjan, means "The Waters of Sweehearts", and in fact is a place that lies to the North of the famous treeless undulating savannah known the world over as The Serengeti, and to the Masai as Sirinket. "The author is perhaps one of the last lifelong European Tanzanian settlers, who possesses an intimate knowledge of the Masai. He has, since childhood mixed freely in friendship with both their children and the elders, and has had a unique opportunity to observe their way of life and customs." Geoffrey Cotterell , Tanzanian Affairs Waters of the Sanjan is an accurate and admirable historic record of my people, recording their way of life at another point in time, yet not so very long ago. And because not many truly authentic books have been written about us, it is, I think, a valuable record of a proud people that will enlighten the reader and allow him to glimpse another world. He may, perhaps, shudder at the horror of some of the more violent sections, but he will emerge the wiser for knowing and understanding a little of what our forefathers had to cope with , and what they suffered, not only at the hands of encroaching colonialism, but at the hand of nature; climatic disaster, diseases of man and beast and inter/intra tribal wars that were the norm and claimed with monotonous regularity the lives of many." Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, he first appeared in New Mutants #98. Initially a supervillain, he later became an antihero, known for his humor and breaking the fourth wall. Deadpool's healing factor causes mental instability, making him an unpredictable fighter. He is a skilled marksman, swordsman, and martial artist. Over the years, Deadpool has been featured in numerous media, including films where he's portrayed by Ryan Reynolds. He is a complex and popular character with many alternate versions, and is considered one of Marvel's most beloved characters.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Deadpool's first appearance was in The New Mutants #98 in 1990, where he was hired to attack Cable and the New Mutants. He was initially a supervillain, but later became known as an antihero.

Deadpool was created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, with Liefeld responsible for his visual design and name, and Nicieza for his speech mannerisms. Nicieza gave Deadpool the real name "Wade Wilson" as an inside joke, as a nod to the character "Slade Wilson," also known as Deathstroke from Teen Titans.

Deadpool's design was influenced by Spider-Man, with Liefeld wanting to create a similar character but with guns and swords. He was also influenced by Wolverine and Snake Eyes, wanting to create his own versions of those characters.
