For about 40 years after the death of Jesus, the early Jesus followers met together for worship and to share their memories about what Jesus said and did. Their memory of who Jesus was, what he had done. But their memory was directly affected by the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. They needed an explanation for the crucifixion of Jesus that gave meaning and purpose for that horrible event. Several explanations gradually emerged that drew on their religious practice of sacrifice for forgiveness. If you wanted to be forgiven, you went to the temple and sacrificed an innocent animal. God would see that act, and would respond (according to the temple priests) by forgiving your sins.
Gradually the early followers of Jesus began to see Jesus as God’s ultimate sacrifice to forgive their sins. Thus in Christian story telling the death of Jesus was seen as the intentional act of God to forgive sins. No human death could do that, because all humanity was sinful and thus they could only die for their own sins. But since Jesus was sinless, his crucifixion death was an effective God act of forgiving the sins of humanity.
In more recent years that Substitutionary Atonement explanation for the death of Jesus has been challenged. What does it say about God if God had to have one person killed before God could forgive other people? And if this excruciatingly painful death of Jesus is essential for human salvation, the teachings and life of Jesus loses its meaning (except that Jesus has to be sinless because if he had ever sinned his death would have no salvation impact for others.)
In other words, did Jesus see himself as God’s sacrificial lamb, or was he a living prophet in the tradition of Isaiah and other Old Testament prophets proclaiming God’s intention for all humanity?

In Divine Authority, Russell Evans (Planetshakers Church) reveals God’s original intent for humanity: that we would carry His delegated authority on the earth. Adam forfeited it. Jesus restored it. Now, believers everywhere are called to walk under, in, with, and out of that authority so Heaven’s reality can break into everyday life.

Through powerful biblical insight—supported by contributions from Sam Evans and the Planetshakers team—you will discover:

    ●      What Divine Authority is and why God entrusted it to His children
    ●      How Jesus won back the authority Adam lost
    ●      What it means to live under Christ’s Lordship and in your new identity
    ●      How to partner with the Holy Spirit to bring Heaven to earth
    ●      How to carry God’s Kingdom into families, workplaces, cities, and nations
This is more than revelation —it’s an invitation.
You were created to live authorised, empowered, and aligned with Heaven.
It’s time to step into Divine Authority… and see His will performed on earth as it is in Heaven.

The Zondervan Reflective Audio Study series provides a unique audio learning experience. Unlike a traditional audiobook's direct narration of a book’s text, A Burning House Audio Study include high-quality live recordings in which the author teaches the content of the book, discusses important points, and introduces additional sources. The end result is an engaging audio study focused on learning.
    American Evangelicalism is ablaze.
Doctrinal identity unites black and white evangelicals, but divisions along ethnic and cultural lines have long tarnished the movement's witness. With desegregation on the horizon, Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I've come to believe that we are integrating into a burning house." As with the country, if we hope to fully integrate the American Evangelical church, we must do so as firefighters.
In A Burning House Audio Study, pastor Brandon Washington challenges American Evangelicalism to embrace its historical commitment to orthodoxy and orthopraxy. Only then can it become a holy witness to humanity and embody shalom—peace, justice, wholeness—in the world. These are the inevitable fruits of espousing and preaching a comprehensive gospel message.
