In Incan legends, the Viracocha were the creators of civilization, emerging from Lake Titicaca during a time of darkness to teach sustainable practices before vanishing into the sky. Mythology predicts their return during times of great trouble.   
 
Archaeologist Eve Barcelon finds herself in such a troubled era, with runaway global warming, poisoned oceans, and devastating wars threatening humanity's survival. Raised by her mother, with a distant father, Eve focuses on her career, earning a Ph.D. and a position at Harvard by her early twenties.   
 
When a mysterious organization invites her to lead an expedition to newly discovered Mayan ruins, she seizes the opportunity. However, her journey spirals into chaos as she travels from Belize to Peru's Andes, pursued by a rogue American Army unit and approached by an untrustworthy operative.   
 
Eve soon discovers shocking truths about her ancestry and an inexplicable inherited power. She will learn her vital role in preserving humanity.
