Synopsis

"Intimacy Codes" explores how cultural norms profoundly shape our understanding and practice of intimacy, revealing that what's considered loving or connected in one culture can be misinterpreted or even offensive in another. The book challenges the notion of intimacy as a universal constant, arguing instead that it's a social construct influenced by cultural values, historical contexts, and social expectations. For example, displays of affection, communication styles, and even concepts of romantic partnership vary significantly across cultures.

The book examines cultural differences in both non-sexual and sexual intimacy, drawing upon ethnographic studies, cross-cultural surveys, and analyses of media representations. It emphasizes the impact of globalization and technology on reshaping intimacy codes.

By dissecting these "intimacy codes," the book helps readers navigate cross-cultural relationships with greater empathy and understanding. It progresses by first introducing the core concept, then exploring cultural variations in displays of intimacy, romantic partnerships, and the influence of technology, culminating in practical guidance for fostering empathy in diverse social contexts.

A Reminder of the Rights We Can't Afford to Forget -
Reflections on Freedom, Responsibility and What It Means to Be Human
What holds us together when the world feels fractured? In The Future and You, Emma Gilligan offers a quiet but powerful meditation on the enduring role of human rights and how they can ground us in a shifting world.
Written as a letter to her great-nephew and future generations, this deeply personal book draws on Gilligan’s lifelong commitment to global justice and moral responsibility, from the war-torn landscapes of Chechnya and Ukraine to the lecture halls of Indiana University. With clarity and purpose, she reflects on freedom, duty, dignity and the fragile beauty of being human.
Presented as a series of reflections, each centered on a fundamental human right, the book blends Gilligan’s values and lived experience to offer a framework for daily life.
This is not a manifesto or a memoir. It’s a reminder that we don’t exist in a vacuum and that courage, compassion and responsibility are already within us. We need only return to them.
The Future and You invites readers to remember that the freedoms to speak openly, move freely, live securely and be cared for are not guaranteed — they must be protected, practiced and passed on.
If you're seeking resilience, understanding or a sense of direction in uncertain times, you’ll find insight and reassurance woven throughout this concise yet powerful read. Gilligan’s whimsical illustrations add warmth and imagination to her call for introspection and renewal.

    Deceptive Charisma - Using Charm...

Charisma is one of the most powerful tools of influence. Throughout history, charismatic individuals have captivated audiences, inspired movements, and shaped the course of events. Whether in politics, business, entertainment, or everyday life, people with magnetic personalities often seem to have an almost hypnotic effect on others. But what exactly gives someone charisma, and why is it so effective?
At its core, charisma is a blend of confidence, charm, and emotional intelligence. It is not just about good looks or eloquent speech, though those can play a role. Instead, true charisma lies in the ability to make others feel special, understood, and valued. Charismatic individuals have an innate or developed talent for reading people and adjusting their approach accordingly. They know when to listen, when to speak, and how to convey messages in ways that resonate deeply with their audience.
The psychological impact of charisma is profound. People are naturally drawn to those who exude confidence and warmth. Studies in social psychology suggest that individuals with charismatic traits are often perceived as more competent, trustworthy, and even more likable, regardless of their actual abilities or intentions. This perception creates a halo effect, where one positive trait overshadows potential flaws or red flags.

Only 40 years after the Spanish arrival in Cusco, Peru, Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa  (1532–1592) was commissioned in 1572 by Francisco de Toledo, the fifth Viceroy of Peru, to write a history of the Incas. Toledo intended this history to justify Spanish colonization by documenting the violent and tyrannical nature of the Inca rulers. Sarmiento gathered information through extensive interviews with indigenous informants, former Incan nobles, local leaders, and surviving Spanish conquistadors. To ensure accuracy, his manuscript was read and reviewed by 42 indigenous authorities before publication.
This audiobook presents a reading of Sarmiento de Gamboa’s chapter on one of the most influential and formidable Inca emperors: Túpac Inca Yupanqui, the tenth Sapa Inca. Like his father Pachacuti and his son Huayna Capac, Túpac Inca expanded the Inca Empire, bringing under Inca control the territories of much of present-day Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina, and beyond. He also lived to an advanced age and fathered nearly one hundred children.
The narrator is Michael Henrik Wynn, editor of the educational net radio stream historyradio.org.
