~~~~~  Excerpt  ~~~~~
“What’s up, Mom?” She turned toward me and smiled, showing her small white teeth.
It was another beautiful warm day. Being Wednesday, she had no classes today and I was off from work. A few months ago, I began to work a ‘flex-shift.’ Rather than five 8-hour days, I worked four 10-hour days, which allowed me to enjoy a midweek break. It was especially nice since this school semester Maria only had class on Tuesday and Thursday, allowing us to be together and alone.
“Are you fully comfortable with your body?” I asked my younger, better me.
Quizzened, she looked at me. She wondered, “Why do you ask?”
“I just want to make sure everything is alright with my Baby Girl,” I comforted. Baby Girl was a nickname I gave her when she was a little girl; and Maria refused to let me give up. Whereas other children outgrow their baby-name, Maria embraced hers and grew into becoming my Baby Girl. She got up from her deckchair. Taking the couple of steps needed, she came over me and sat on my lap. She wrapped an arm behind my neck and leaned her head against mine. With her cheek against mine, I couldn’t help but notice the sweet smell of her perspiration.
“What’s up Mom? What are you really thinking?” she sagely wondered.
I wrapped an arm around her petite hips and shifted her little butt so she sat on my thighs more comfortably. Merrily perched on her mom’s lap like a contented kitten, my Baby Girl snuggled up closer to me. I loved the fact Maria never outgrew being physically affectionate with her mom. As kids, her sister and brother learned to resent their mother giving them hugs and kisses. After a while, they began to fuss if I even reached over to adjust their clothes or fix their hair. Yet Maria continued to enjoy getting a hug or kiss from her mom, even in front of her friends! She would even sometimes lovingly demand, “Where’s my hug and kiss?”
Girlfriends, we loved doing all the girlie stuff together. We often did each other’s hair and nails. I knew she enjoyed “putting on her mom’s face,” and since she did a better job than I could, I always appreciated when she did my makeup. When she did her mom’s hair, I sat there and indulged enjoying her attentions. Her hair was so similar to my own that when I brushed out her long, soft mane I found it as soothing as if brushing my own.
“I was just thinking about when I was young and when I… umm… umm, when I developed. I know it’s hard to believe I was once your age…” I joked.
“Oh, give me a break,” Maria interrupted and rolled her eyes. “If people didn’t know, they’d think you were my sister before Mercy. Are you fishing for a compliment? You know you’re too young to be a cougar and too hot to be a MILF. So, there,” and the impetuous brat blew me a raspberry. I laughed at Baby Girl sticking her tongue out at her mom; and tried to refocus my thoughts away from it.
    Bill Wilson was a washed up Wall Street analyst after the Great Crash of 1929 who was dying of alcoholism and decided to clean up. He read “Varieties off Religious Experience” by eminent Harvard Professor William James (whose own brother had died of alcoholism). The rest, as they say, is history and the result was what Aldous Huxley called the most Important social movement of the 20th century. This book weaves together brief excerpts from James’ book (which had radical ideas about spirituality being an end to itself and mostly separate from religion) with the writings of Bill Wilson to show how the two men’s thinking interacted to create the 12 Step movement. It sheds light on the profound influence James had on early 20th Century Agnosticism. It is solid analysis of James’ important contribution to American Spiritualism. Most of all, though, it is a reflection on the 12 Steps of AA & a meditation on what ‘Higher Power’ means. It is a soothing hot soak in the great writing of two men who developed a way out of the soul sickness that is addiction. They both saw spirituality as separate from religion which arises from the basic human need for some private higher power during moments of self-despair. The relief that comes makes life larger, allows us (finally) to belong and offers dignity — for alcoholics or those who live with alcoholics. It works. It really does. Read a sentence or a page per day. This book is a journey of reflection and meditation.
    From a National Book Award finalist, an “entertaining and inspiring” biography of the heroic Gettysburg commander, college president, and governor of Maine (Senator George J. Mitchell).   This is a vivid account of the life of Joshua Chamberlain, whose is best known for leading a successful bayonet charge against a Confederate assault that was memorialized in the film Gettysburg—and earned Chamberlain the Medal of Honor. But his life was long and his military, political, and academic careers were filled with numerous notable accomplishments as well, among them the governorship of Maine and presidency of Bowdoin College, before his Civil War wounds finally caught up with him in 1914. This account, with illustrations included, tells his absorbing, wide-ranging story, explores his continuing mystique, and paints a vivid picture of late nineteenth-century New England.   “A worthy tribute to Chamberlain’s lasting legacy.” —Civil War Book Review “Joshua Chamberlain was much more than a war hero, and Pullen’s thoughtful book fills out the picture of his remarkable life.” —Senator George J. Mitchell   “Reveal[s] a complicated character, without diminishing the almost mythic status he has assumed.” —The Washington Times
    France is a land absolutely steeped in history. It has always been a leading nation of Western Europe, and in many ways, one could say France is Western Europe.
    One could confidently say such a thing because of the long history of French polities taking charge in world history. Before France proper even existed, the tribes there, such as the Franks, played a central role in regional affairs. For example, as the Roman Empire was falling apart, the Franks were increasingly relied upon for the security of the ailing Roman state.
    And when Rome toppled, the Franks took it upon themselves to pick up the pieces. It was from their efforts that the so-called “Holy Roman Empire” was forged. This massive conglomerate once contained much of France and a large chunk of the rest of western and central Europe.
    France then became a nation in its own right and would become one of the most powerful powers of Europe, with colonies all over the world. France would then undergo much internal upheaval and a revolution that would rock the whole world. It would take France generations to recover, but recover it did. Before arriving where it is today, the country would go through two world wars and a cold one.
    In this audiobook, you will discover the following:France’s origins and its prehistoryFrance’s relations with the Roman EmpireHow the French survived the Middle AgesThe French Revolution and the impact it had on societyThe Napoleonic Wars and the changes Napoleon made in France and its coloniesFrench colonialism and a look at some of the major French coloniesFrance during the world warsPostwar and Cold War FranceModern France and what its future might holdAnd much more!
