These two stories by Kurt Vonnegut were written over a decade apart but they are definitely connected. The Big Trip Up Yonder, published in Galaxy Science Fiction January 1954 is a comical yet scary description of what over population was going to do to society after aging was conquered and a simple daily dose of "anti-gerosone" would keep you forever the same age. Would Gramps EVER take 'That Big Trip Up Yonder', or would his hordes of descendants be stuck with him forever in a tiny apartment!? 2 B R 0 2 B, published in Worlds of If, January 1962 takes this basic situation many years into the future and a solution has been found. The population of the US has dropped from 80 billion to 40 million. Not what everyone would call a pretty solution, or the best solution, but nevertheless a solution to the population problem. I believe this is the type of story it is best to listen to, not describe, so enjoy. (Summary by Phil Chenevert)

New York Times Bestseller: In Victorian Britain, an affluent woman hosts a group of Catholic priests in her home—and listens as they tell their stories. Rose, a young girl visiting her grandmother, sits among eleven priests from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As each guest shares the most challenging moments of their vocations, tests of faith that have brought them face-to-face with the miseries, temptations, and evils that lurk beyond the peaceful confines of the rectory, their worldly, wealthy hostess and her granddaughter come to learn the struggles and outcomes of these confrontations with the human condition. “The priests themselves represent a mixed lot—men of exalted backgrounds, culture, worldly experience, who have found their hardest task bringing themselves down to the humble people of their flocks; men who understand only the intellectual, realistic aspects of their faith—and must learn to accept the mystical as well; men who hide their saintliness under uncouth exteriors, who learn the hard way to love their fellow men, who encounter devils as well as saints, murderers, sinners. . . . Lively reading.” —Kirkus Reviews

    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1912
    Public Domain: Yes
Series Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 79
    Description:
Sredni Vashtar is one of Saki’s most unsettling and darkly ironic tales — a precise exploration of repression, power, and private vengeance. The story follows Conradin, a frail boy living under the rigid control of his guardian, Mrs. De Ropp, whose cold authority dominates his life. Deprived of affection and freedom, Conradin retreats into a secret world of imagination and ritual.
Central to this world is the shed at the bottom of the garden, where he keeps a ferret he worships as a personal god, Sredni Vashtar. Through quiet devotion and imagined rites, Conradin gives this creature the power denied to him, and the story unfolds with a calm inevitability toward a chilling climax.
Saki’s restrained prose makes the horror subtle yet potent, arising not from spectacle but from moral indifference and the consequences of cruelty. Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the story’s tension, irony, and quiet menace.
Sredni Vashtar remains a timeless reminder that even the smallest, most silenced lives can harbor forces capable of unsettling and irrevocable change.

The story "Hearts and Hands" of the well-known American writer O. Henry was published for the first time in the collection "Remains" in 1917. In the Baltimore express all places were taken, only one bench opposite an young nice lady was free. At this time two guys entered the coach: one of them was impudent, and the second one - glum-faced. These two characters didn't represent anything unusual, except the handcuffs which held their hands among themselves. The lady recognized one of them and addressed him. The young man showed the girl the handcuffs and said that he couldn't shake her hand. He wanted to explain something but the second forestalled him. This man introduced himself as a criminal and his attendant as a marshal. The story seems to be quite plain, but its salt is hidden in the last two sentences which reveal the real state of things.A SmartTouch Media production.
