This long essay is a work of mock philology, one of several appendices to Twain’s travel novel, A Tramp Abroad. In it, Twain explains, complains about, and shows how one might improve upon various aspects of the (awful) German language. His examples of precisely how the German language is awful include the famed “separable verb” – which allows one to put the first part of a given verb at the beginning – and its second part at the end – of a given clause or sentence (which may, indeed, be very long). He also makes fun of the extreme length of certain compound nouns (which are created by tacking two – or more – words together, without using hyphens to clarify where one ends and the next begins), as well as the many noun and verb forms one must master (memorize) in order to use German cases properly. As the essay progresses, Twain includes a few hilarious passages that are partly or mostly in (his own, awful) German. Nevertheless, the work is easily understandable even by people who don’t know any German at all.(In the novel, A Tramp Abroad, Twain details his journey with his friend, Harris, through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, where he encounters various ridiculous situations. Here, much of the humor lies in his silly, often over-stated characterization of the circumstances as quickly grasped and easily explained by such a seasoned tourist as himself, while he also make plain throughout the profoundly strange nature of many of his experiences, and the various pitfalls he and Harris run into as they try to navigate their unfamiliar terrain.) When Jesus was asked to sum up the whole huge leather Bible into one simple phrase, he actually gave us two commandments. But modern evangelicals have short attention spans and only heard that we should love our neighbor. Christians everywhere have bought ineffective refrigerator magnets and bumper stickers, but in this book, we will give you better stickers and magnets because we finally found the perfect formula to honor God through block parties!
What would happen if every follower of Jesus twisted the Great Commandment into only loving our neighbors? Is it possible we can create world peace by ignoring that whole subjective 'loving God' part and throwing a block party instead?
The Art of Shallow Neighboring was penned in response to the sheer number of Christian books and organizations casting aside true Biblical study and discipleship for trendy business practices and scriptural mis-interpretations. While this book is intended to be a Christian comedy and parody, there is nothing funny about the way modern evangelicalism is treating the Bible. Hopefully this book will help people everywhere realize we need to stop looking for the shortcuts to God, and instead set down our digital devices, pull out that old dusty Bible, and begin true and deep study. I implore small groups to put aside video curricula and appoint a wise teacher of the Bible to teach, and for Churches to truly place the Bible above trendy business practices. Let us repent and return to God as they did in the time of Ezra, the priest.

And lately Becky’s been chased by dismal letters from the bank—letters with large red sums she can’t bear to read. She tries cutting back. But none of her efforts succeeds. Her only consolation is to buy herself something … just a little something. Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life—and the lives of those around her—forever.“Sophie Kinsella keeps her finger on the cultural pulse, while leaving me giddy with laughter.”—Jojo Moyes, author of The Giver of Stars and The Last Letter from Your Lover

The New York Times–bestselling comic strip collection that proves “how Doonesbury predicted Donald Trump’s presidential run twenty-nine years ago” (The Washington Post).

He tried to warn us. Ever since the release of the first Trump-for-President trial balloon in 1987, Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau has tirelessly tracked and highlighted the unsavory career of the most unqualified candidate to ever aspire to the White House. It’s all there—the hilarious narcissism, the schoolyard bullying, the loathsome misogyny, the breathtaking ignorance; and a good portion of the Doonesbury cast has been tangled up in it. Join Duke, Honey, Earl, J. J., Mike, Mark, Roland, Boopsie, B. D., Sal, Alice, Elmont, Sid, Zonker, Sam, Bernie, Rev. Sloan, and even the Red Rascal as they cross storylines with the big, orange airhorn who’s giving the GOP such fits.

Garry Trudeau is the “sleazeball” “third-rate talent” who draws the “overrated” comic strip Doonesbury, which “very few people read.” He lives in New York City with his wife Jane Pauley, who “has far more talent than he has.”

“Why so surprised, America? Doonesbury has been preparing us for President Trump since 1987.” —USA Today

“Trump and ‘Doonesbury’: The Comic Gift That Keeps on Giving.” —The New York Times

“If anybody thinks Trump can do a presidential pivot and change his personality Yuge! should be required reading.” —The Daily Kos

“[Trudeau is] practically the court artist of Castle Trump, and no one can beat him (not even Trump, whose capacity for self-parody can’t be overstated).” —Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing
