  In 1204, the great Angevin Empire was fragmenting under King John's rule. Unable to withstand France's invasion of Normandy, John also faced difficult relations with the papacy, and rising dissent among his barons. By the time John died in 1216, the failed Magna Carta gave way to civil conflict, and more than half of the country had fallen to the dauphin of France. These troubles were then passed, along with the crown, to John's nine-year-old son, Henry III. 
   
   
   
  Even with a regency government commanding the ship of state, Henry faced a dire threat to his royal authority. But the First Baron's War came to an end as Henry aligned himself with the pope and offered a revised Magna Carta. While this may have ensured short-term survival, living up to the promises of this foundational contract would create a more significant challenge—and lay the groundwork for the Second Baron's War.

  From 768 to 800, Charlemagne, also referred to as Charles the Great, was King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and Emperor of the Romans. Charlemagne combined many western and main Europe at the time of the Early Middle Ages. Since the fall of the Western Roman Empire 3 centuries before, he was the first acknowledged emperor to rule from western Europe. The Carolingian Empire is the name given to Charlemagne's broadening Frankish world. Antipope Paschal the Third later canonized him.Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon had an oldest child, Charlemagne, who was born before their main marriage.Following his dad's death in the year 768, he ended up being king of the Franks, at first as co-ruler with his brother Carloman I till the latter's death in the year 771. He followed his dad's position to the papacy as sole king and became its protector, driving the Lombards out of northern Italy and leading an attack into Muslim Spain. He waged a project against the Saxons to his east, requiring them to convert to Christendom or face death, resulting in events like the Massacre of Verden. He reached the peak of his power in the year 800, when Pope Leo the Third crowned him "Emperor of the Romans" on Christmas Day at Rome's Old St. Peter's Basilica.

She is best-known for her two influential novels, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, and for developing a philosophical system she called Objectivism. Rand's first major success as a writer came with The Fountainhead in 1943, a romantic and philosophical novel that eventually became a worldwide success. It was eventually also made into a movie. Atlas Shrugged, published in 1957, was considered Rand's best work. It is a novel of the morality of rational self-interest. In this public lecture, she criticizes altruism and mysticism as incompatible with business.
