Synopsis

The Homing Pigeon provides an evocative examination of the integral role played by pigeons in military communications during pivotal moments of history. Through a meticulously curated selection of documents, reports, and communications by the United States War Department and Army Signal Corps, the anthology traverses themes of innovation, inter-species alliances, and adaptive strategies in warfare. With a robust variety of styles, from technical accounts to vivid narratives, this collection captures the eclecticism of military documentation and the nuances of wartime communications, offering rare insights into how these resilient birds shaped tactical decisions and historical outcomes. Bringing together voices from the esteemed entities of the U.S. War Department and Signal Corps, this anthology aligns with broader movements in military historiography that seek to uncover lesser-known narratives. The contributing authors represent a collective expertise in wartime communications, operating at a nexus of military strategy and natural history. Their collaborative effort paints a compelling portrait of how animal intelligence and military necessity intersected during conflicts, further enriching the thematic pursuit of understanding unconventional military practices. Offering readers a unique opportunity to explore a confluence of historical and natural inquiries, The Homing Pigeon invites seasoned historians and curious novices alike. Its educational value extends beyond military history, prompting reflections on adaptive problem-solving and communication strategies. Readers are encouraged to immerse themselves in this anthology to appreciate the symbiotic dynamics explored within its pages, and the intricate dialogues it nurtures about non-human contributions to human conflicts. This collection stands as a testament to the diverse narratives and insights it brings forth, fostering ongoing discussions on the complexities of wartime innovation.

David's father stood beside the stone chimney and spoke to his son. "It's time to grow up, lad," he said. "Mr. Siler has hired you to go to Virginia with him. He's run ragged trying to keep the cattle with him, and he needs a young 'un with strong legs and keen eyes to help him out. Better hitch the wagon and say your good-byes." Growing up in Greene County, Tennessee, Davy Crockett's education came from the toil of hard labor. Working as a farm hand and wagon driver, he learned about the people and the land of the West -- and he was captivated. The untamed wilderness, the sound of wild animals, and the roar of the river would be his destiny. One of America's best-known folk heroes, Crockett served as a frontiersman, a scout, a soldier, and a politician in the U.S. Congress. He died defending the Alamo, a steadfast citizen and heroic leader to the very end.

Of the billions of humans now alive and kicking, let two of them fall in love, marry, and yet it can’t stick. They chose each other, and even still…Just two can’t make ‘love’ work – not two lovers, two races, two nations, two siblings, two people. We crave to know true love. That’s the deep well of thirst in every eye, every soul. It’s not in our control, however. Our own spirits are not the source, the spring - that’s why our ‘love’ breaks down. When we see this, when we feel this, our hearts cry out to God to know true love. We need his touch, not just a story. We need the healing Spirit of God’s love, not a religion. In this short book I share with you the simple, powerful story of Jesus and his offer of God’s love and Spirit to you.

From May 1941 to the end of night raids in 1943, Luftwaffe bombers attacked provincial cities across England, Scotland, and Wales. However, these air raids are not considered part of the Blitz—at least, not according to the British Official History. The official historiography maintains that the Blitz on the United Kingdom ended when aircraft were redeployed to support the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, after the final major raid against London that May. In After the Blitz: The Luftwaffe Bombing of Britain, 1941–1943, author Stephen Moore argues that official histories minimize the impact of bombing on cities like Newcastle, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester, and Birmingham because they use attacks on London to define the Blitz's chronological boundaries. By excavating British and German archives and cross-referencing government documentation with memoirs and secondary sources, Moore demonstrates that Britain suffered from Luftwaffe assaults well after the official end date of the Blitz and rescues the history of post-Blitz bombings from obscurity.
After the Blitz cements itself in the historical record by confronting the official scholarship that has been foundational to the field and affirms the traumatic experiences of people who lived outside of London during this period.
