With a robust variety of styles, from technical accounts to vivid narratives, this collection captures the eclecticism of military documentation and the nuances of wartime communications, offering rare insights into how these resilient birds shaped tactical decisions and historical outcomes. Bringing together voices from the esteemed entities of the U.S. War Department and Signal Corps, this anthology aligns with broader movements in military historiography that seek to uncover lesser-known narratives. Offering readers a unique opportunity to explore a confluence of historical and natural inquiries, The Homing Pigeon invites seasoned historians and curious novices alike. Its educational value extends beyond military history, prompting reflections on adaptive problem-solving and communication strategies. Readers are encouraged to immerse themselves in this anthology to appreciate the symbiotic dynamics explored within its pages, and the intricate dialogues it nurtures about non-human contributions to human conflicts. This collection stands as a testament to the diverse narratives and insights it brings forth, fostering ongoing discussions on the complexities of wartime innovation.

An indelible portrait of one of the most famous and beloved authors in the canon of American literature—a collection of letters between Harper Lee and one of her closest friends that reveals the famously private writer as never before, in her own words.
The violent racism of the American South drove Wayne Flynt away from his home state of Alabama, but the publication of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee’s classic novel about courage, community, and equality, inspired him to return in the early 1960s and craft a career documenting and teaching Alabama history. His writing resonated with many Alabamians, in particular three sisters: Louise, Alice, and Nelle Harper Lee. Beginning with their first meeting in 1983, a mutual respect and affection for the state’s history and literature matured into a deep friendship between two families who can trace their roots there back more than five generations.
Flynt and Nelle Harper Lee began writing to one other while she was living in New York—heartfelt, insightful, and humorous letters in which they swapped stories, information, and opinions on topics both personal and professional: their families, books, Alabama history and social values, health concerns, and even their fears and accomplishments. Though their earliest missives began formally—""Dear Dr. Flynt""—as the years passed and their mutual admiration grew, their exchanges became more intimate and emotional, opening with ""Dear Friend"" and closing with ""I love you, Nelle."" Through their enduring correspondence, the Lees and the Flynts became completely immersed in each other’s lives.
Beautifully written, intelligent, and telling, this remarkable compendium of their letters—a correspondence that lasted for a quarter century, from 1992 until Harper Lee’s death in February 2016—offers an incisive and compelling look into the mind, heart, and work of one of the most beloved authors in modern literary history.

Courage Under Fire is the first book published about Operation Lamar Plain. After fifty years, the story of the renowned 101st Airborne's major offensive near Tam Ky, South Vietnam, remains largely unknown. Fighting at Tam Ky by the 1st Brigade began 15 May 1969 while the 101st's 3rd Brigade battled on Hamburger Hill. The political consequences of Hamburger Hill's high casualties caused Lamar Plain and its high casualties to remain classified and undisclosed. Decades later, the fighting at Tam Ky is mostly forgotten except by those who fought there.

Sherwood's superb research of now declassified records uncovers how such a large battle could remain hidden and undisclosed. But that is not the heart of his story. His focus is on the courage and commitment of the young infantry soldiers who fought. This book uses actual battle records and eyewitness accounts to follow "Never Quit" Delta Company and its sister companies through continuous combat at Tam Ky. Delta Company's soldiers lived up to their motto despite increasing casualties, a tough enemy, harsh battlefield conditions, and loss of leaders.

For all who fought at Tam Ky, their bravery and devotion to duty in an increasingly unpopular war is worthy to be remembered. With veterans of Tam Ky now growing older and fewer in number, it is past time to tell their story.

A celebration of curiosity, compassion, and the surprising power of fear, based on the New York Times bestselling author and renowned professor’s 2015 commencement address at Syracuse University.
“Being smart and rich are lucky, but being curious & compassionate will save your ass.”
Every year there are one or two commencement speeches that strike a chord with audiences far greater than the student bodies for which they are intended. In 2015 Mary Karr’s speech to the graduating class of Syracuse University caught fire, hailed across the Internet as one of the most memorable in recent years, and lighting up the Twittersphere.
In Now Go Out There, Karr explains why having your heart broken is just as—if not more—important than falling in love; why getting what you want often scares you more than not getting it; how those experiences that appear to be the worst cannot be so easily categorized; and how to cope with the setbacks that inevitably befall all of us. “Don’t make the mistake of comparing your twisted up insides to other people’s blow-dried outsides,” she cautions. “Even the most privileged person in this stadium suffers the torments of the damned just going about the business of being human.”
An ideal—and beautifully designed—gift for a graduate or for anyone looking for some down-to-earth life advice, Now Go Out There is destined to become a classic.

New Zealand, known as Aotearoa in Māori, is a land rich in history and cultural significance. Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, this island nation is renowned not only for its stunning landscapes but also for the diverse stories that have shaped its identity. The history of New Zealand is marked by the migration of its first inhabitants, the Māori, and the later arrival of Europeans, both of whom have contributed to the country’s unique social and cultural fabric.
The Māori people, the first to settle the islands, arrived from eastern Polynesia between the 9th and 13th centuries. Their journey to New Zealand is a story of exploration, resilience, and connection to the land. The Māori developed a sophisticated society with rich traditions, strong spiritual beliefs, and a deep connection to the natural world. Their oral histories, cultural practices, and the Māori language (Te Reo Māori) continue to shape the nation’s identity to this day.
The arrival of Europeans in the 17th century, particularly the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and later Captain James Cook, marked the beginning of profound change for the Māori and the land itself. European settlers, driven by the promise of economic opportunities, eventually established colonies in the 19th century. This period saw the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, an agreement that aimed to establish a partnership between the Māori and the British Crown. Despite its noble intentions, the treaty's implementation and interpretation have been subjects of contention and legal battles for decades, particularly regarding Māori land rights.
