Synopsis

A prominent figure of the Age of Enlightenment, the French philosopher Denis Diderot served as chief editor of the ‘Encyclopédie’, the first encyclopaedia to include contributions from many named contributors. He developed a materialist philosophy and arrived at startling intuitive insights into biology and chemistry. In speculating on the origins of life without divine intervention, he foreshadowed the evolutionary theories of Darwin and put forth a prophetic picture of the cellular structure of matter. His ideas, often captured in the form of paradox and dialogue, stem from a sense of life’s ambiguities and a profound understanding of the complexities and contradictions of human nature. This eBook presents Diderot’s collected works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts appearing in digital print for the first time, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Imagine you are sick of the government. Bureaucrats and aristocrats are constantly telling you what to do, basically enforcing a totalitarian regime. Maybe this is not so hard to imagine after what has been happening in recent years. And then imagine you protest. But the government has come up with a new method to kill people: The guillotine. Way more efficient than simple beheading, some jerk at the top then decides that anyone who is suspicious of rebellion needs their head chopped off, like the crazy lady in Alice in Wonderland.
This is Robespierre’s legacy. The evil French guy knew hardly any boundaries. He was vicious, murderous, and not to be taken lightly.
One of the most widely known figures of the Reign of terror was Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre, a French attorney and statesman. He promoted universal manhood suffrage and the removal of both clergy celibacy and oppression as a member of the Constituent Assembly and the Jacobin Club. In 1791, Robespierre ended up being a singing advocate of male residents without a political voice, promoting for their limitless entry to the National Guard, public workplaces, and the right to bear arms in self-defense. Robespierre was a key figure in the agitation that led to the deposition of the French monarchy on August tenth, 1792, and the assembling of a National Convention. His purpose was to establish a single, indivisible France, equality before the law, the abolition of authorities, and the defense of direct democratic ideal visions.

    Saving Ourselves - From Climate...

We've known for decades that climate change is an existential crisis. For just as long, we've seen the complete failure of our institutions to rise to the challenge. Fossil fuel interests maintain a stranglehold on political and economic power. Even though we have seen growing concern from everyday people, civil society has succeeded only in pressuring decision makers to adopt watered-down policies. Is there any hope of achieving the systemic change we need?

Dana R. Fisher argues that there is a realistic path forward for climate action—but only through mass mobilization that responds to the growing severity and frequency of disastrous events. She assesses the current state of affairs and shows why public policy and private-sector efforts have been ineffective. Spurred by this lack of progress, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines the radical flank of the climate movement: its emergence and growth, its use of direct action, and how it might evolve as the climate crisis worsens. She considers when and how activism is most successful, identifying the importance of creating community, capitalizing on shocking moments, and cultivating resilience. Clear-eyed yet optimistic, Saving Ourselves offers timely insights on how social movements can take power back and open windows of opportunity for transformative climate action.

    Jainism - The Path of...

Jainism, one of the oldest religions in the world, offers a profound philosophical and spiritual framework that emphasizes non-violence, truth, and the quest for liberation. Rooted in ancient Indian traditions, Jainism has significantly influenced the cultural and ethical landscape of India and beyond. With a rich history that dates back over two millennia, Jain teachings focus on the importance of individual responsibility, ethical conduct, and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
At the heart of Jainism lies the principle of Ahimsa, or non-violence, which extends not only to humans but to all forms of life, reflecting a deep commitment to compassion and respect for nature. This principle is not merely a passive refrain from harm; it is an active dedication to fostering well-being and harmony in all aspects of life. Alongside Ahimsa, Jains practice Satya (truthfulness), Asteya (non-stealing), Brahmacharya (chastity), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), forming a comprehensive ethical code that guides their daily lives and spiritual aspirations.
Jainism also emphasizes the significance of self-discipline and self-realization as pathways to liberation (Moksha) from the cycle of birth and death (Samsara). The teachings of the Tirthankaras, spiritual teachers who have attained enlightenment, serve as guides for followers on their spiritual journey. These enlightened beings exemplify the ideal virtues of Jain philosophy and provide practical insights for navigating the complexities of life.
