An empty chair can mean many things. Symbolic perhaps – a memorial for a loved one now gone. Or it can be welcoming and comfortable, waiting for someone to sit and relax. There again, it could be so uncomfortable that no one wants to sit in it anyway! Sometimes people are defined by their chair. My grandfather, for instance, had a wooden rocking chair, which no one else was ever allowed to sit in, and my only memories of him were rocking in his chair. So perhaps you have a favourite chair – empty and waiting for you to sit down with a cuppa or a glass of cheer – where for a little while you can enjoy my latest book of short stories.

The Shadow-Line

Written in 1915, The Shadow-Line is based upon events and experiences from twenty-seven years earlier to which Conrad returned obsessively in his fiction. A young sea captain's first command brings with it a succession of crises: his sea is becalmed, the crew laid low by fever, and his deranged first mate is convinced that the ship is haunted by the malignant spirit of a previous captain.This is indeed a work full of "sudden passions," in which Conrad is able to show how the full intensity of existence can be experienced by the man who, in the words of the older Captain Giles, is prepared to "stand up to his bad luck, to his mistakes, to his conscience." The Star

H. G. Wells

Herbert George Wells (1866-1946) was a prolific English writer of science fiction stories and novels and is frequently credited as being the father of science fiction. "The Star" is the story of a shooting star which is discovered hurtling towards our solar system. It is on a collision course with Neptune. When the celestial crash occurs, the two planets combine into a gigantic burning star which is being drawn rapidly and irresistably towards our sun. But on what trajectory? Will it hit any other planets on its way? What about the earth?

Love and Friendship and Other...

Jane Austen

This book draws together some of Jane Austen's earliest literary efforts. It includes "Love & Freindship" and "Lesley Castle" both told through the medium of letters written by the characters. It also contains her wonderful "History of England" and a "Collection of Letters" and lastly a chapter containing "Scraps". In these offerings, we may see the beginnings of Miss Austen's literary style. We may also discern traces of characters that we encounter in her later works. G. K. Chesterton in his preface, for example, says of a passage in Love and Freindship; "... is there not the foreshadowing of another and more famous father; and do we not hear for a moment, in the rustic cottage by the Uske, the unmistakable voice of Mr. Bennet?" These works are certainly worth exploring for their own sakes and not simply as historical relics.
