Beschreibung

In 'The Olynthiacs and the Philippics of Demosthenes,' the iconic Athenian statesman and orator delivers a powerful critique of Macedonian hegemony in the fourth century BCE. The Olynthiacs, a series of three speeches, call for Athenian intervention in the face of Philip II's expansionist ambitions, while the Philippics vehemently urge a united response against the imminent threat posed by Macedon. Utilizing a passionate and eloquent rhetorical style, Demosthenes crafts artful appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos, masterfully engaging his audience and invoking the collective spirit of the Athenian democracy to act decisively. His works remain significant not only for their historical context but also for their exemplary rhetorical structure, serving as a guide for statesmanship and civic responsibility. Demosthenes (384–322 BCE) is often heralded as one of the greatest orators of antiquity, whose lifelong dedication to the art of rhetoric stemmed from his struggles with speech impediments. His rigorous self-improvement and commitment to political life were deeply motivated by the challenges faced by Athens during his lifetime, particularly the rise of Macedonian power under Philip II and Alexander the Great. Such historical pressures informed his impassioned pleas for unity and action, reflecting his fervent belief in the resilience of Athenian democracy. This compelling collection is essential reading for anyone interested in ancient Greek politics, rhetoric, and history. Demosthenes' persuasive mastery not only illuminates his immediate historical context but also provides timeless insights into the dynamics of power, civic engagement, and the art of persuasion. Engaging with 'The Olynthiacs and the Philippics' invites readers to reflect on the enduring relevance of rhetoric in the face of political adversity.

The Sutra of 42 Chapters is a scripture complied in the first century CE.  Each saying comes from Buddha, but the whole work was a new anthology created especially for introducing Buddhism in a new country. That's why it makes such a good, basic introduction to the world view of Gautam Buddha. It is very simple in its approach, very direct. It is, in essence the whole of Buddha's message, but very simple, not elaborate and very scholarly as other Buddhist scriptures are.
Osho extracts the kernel of Buddha's profound insight and understanding and presents his everlasting message to the contemporary listener in a manner that is lucid, straightforward and humorous. Far from being just a statue, here Buddha is an amazing human being so far ahead of his time that even now he is only just beginning to be more widely understood.
In these talks Osho discusses the need for doubt and argument in the spiritual search, the nature of desire and the discipline of non-attachment.
The talks in this audiobook are a series of original OSHO Talks, titled "The Discipline of Transcendence, Vol.2".

In the early 70s a drugged-out seventeen-year-old named Doug, along with his secretly gay, openly black, best friend, decides to hitchhike across the country in search of a mythical Utopia. They meet Bologna Jane & Tina the Monkey Girl, Big Arm and Nigga Dog. They almost die along the way. Doug hooks up with his brother and friends on converted school bus. They harvest huge bags of really weak marijuana, thanks to a couple of Redneck Hippies, and try to sell it. Along the way, Doug winds up getting his ribs and heart broken.
Sick of hitchhiking and hunger, Doug decides it is time to get rich. He gets sucked into the inside world of the famous Glenn W. Turner and his get-rich-quick scheme: Koscot Interplanetary, Incorporated. Doug cuts his hair, buys a suite and tie, and along with a bunch of Disney World rejects, spends his days trying to convince strangers to give him a $5000 so he can make them rich. Then he changes into his real clothes and spends his nights begging strangers to give him a buck so he can eat.
His failure to become a good salesman or panhandler leads him to a group of friendly Satan-worshiping heroin addicts who believe that in the end of time, Jesus will forgive Satan, who will then resume his place as the greatest Angel in all of Heaven.
This is a completely true story. Proof exists in the form of letters, interviews, memorabilia and historical evidence. Besides, nobody could make this up.

In Riding, Pardis Mahdavi meditates on the lessons learned over a lifetime of horseback riding and the falling, failing, and joy it brings. At once a history of Caspian horses, an exploration of Mahdavi's Iranian-American identity and family history, and a consideration of the capacity for self-reflection and self-compassion through human-animal relationships, Riding offers a roadmap for learning to live in harmony with the self and the environment around us. Mahdavi shows how her relationship with horses gives her insights into intergenerational strength and tools for healing intergenerational trauma. Riding from the mountains of Iran to the beaches of California, Mahdavi shares her love affair with horses, rediscovers a homeland she longs for, and ultimately finds her strength.

A concise, authoritative overview of a little-understood yet extremely important phenomenon in world politics: the use of economic sanctions by one country to punish another.

It's hard to browse the news without seeing reports of yet another imposition of sanctions by one country on another. The United States has sanctions against more than thirty countries. Russia has repeatedly imposed sanctions against former Soviet republics. China has developed its own approach, including targeting private entities such as the NBA. And it's not just major powers: Japan and South Korea have sanctioned each other over WWII and colonial legacies; Saudi Arabia against Qatar because of differences over Iran; and France, Germany, and Norway against Brazil over the Amazon forest and climate change. In Sanctions: What Everyone Needs to Know®, Bruce Jentleson—one of America's leading scholars on the subject—answers the fundamental questions about sanctions today: Why are they used so much? What are their varieties? What are the key factors affecting their success? Why have they become the tool of first resort for states engaged in international conflict? Jentleson demonstrates that examining sanctions is key to understanding international relations and explains how and why they will likely continue to bear on global politics.
