Synopsis

“A stimulating compendium” on topics from antibiotics to animals, featuring Rebecca Solnit, E.O. Wilson, Nicholas Carr, Elizabeth Kolbert, and many more (Kirkus Reviews).   “A consistently strong series . . . Making connections between seemingly unrelated topics can help expand thinking, as seen in the effects of automated navigation on both airplane pilot error and Inuit hunting accidents that Nicholas Carr explores in ‘The Great Forgetting.’ Sarah Stewart Johnson makes a similar connection between the loss of a 1912 Antarctic expedition and the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in ‘O-Rings.’ . . . Essays like Virginia Hughes’s ‘23 and You’ investigates the effects of availability of individual genetic information on human interactions, while pieces like Maryn McKenna’s ‘Imagining the Post-Antibiotics Future’ and Kate Sheppard’s ‘Under Water’ remind us of unpleasant futures which we have in large part created ourselves. But Barbara Kingsolver’s ‘Where it Begins,’ a lyrical musing on connectedness, or Wilson’s optimistic, bug-loving ‘The Rebirth of Gorongosa,’ reveal that among the strange, shocking, or depressing, there is still unadulterated joy to be found.” —Publishers Weekly   “Undeniably exquisite . . . meditations that reveal not only how science actually happens but also who or what propels its immutable humanity.” —Maria Popova, Brain Pickings   Contributors include: Katherine Bagley • Nicholas Carr • David Dobbs • Pippa Goldschmidt • Amy Harmon • Robin Marantz Henig • Virginia Hughes • Ferris Jabr • Sarah Stewart Johnson • Barbara J. King • Barbara Kingsolver • Maggie Koerth-Baker • Elizabeth Kolbert • Joshua Lang • Maryn McKenna • Seth Mnookin • Justin Nobel • Fred Pearce • Corey S. Powell • Roy Scranton • Kate Sheppard • Bill Sherwonit • Rebecca Solnit • David Treuer • E.O. In 1914, the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry Regiment was a cavalry regiment with its headquarters in Kirkcaldy and squadrons based in Dunfermline, Cupar, Dundee and Forfar. The regiment was sent to Gallipoli in September 1915, and fought there as a dismounted cavalry formation and served until the final disembarkation, being one of the last units to leave. In just two monthsthe regiment lost three quarters of its strength to casualties and disease. The survivors were sent to Egypt where, in 1917, they formed the cadre of an infantry battalion, the 14th Battalion Royal Highlanders; better known as the famous Black Watch. The 14th Battalion formed part of the 74th (Yeomanry) Divisioncommanded by Major General Eric Girdwood. In Egypt and Palestine, the 14th Battalion fought with distinction against the Turkish forces at the Battle of Sheria in November 1917, and played a vital role in the events leading up to the fall of Jerusalem.Following the German offensive on the Western Front in March 1918, the 14th Battalion was rushed to France and sawaction in Picardy during the closing stages of the war. On the Somme, the battalion suffered heavily in the fighting aroundMoislains in September 1918.This classic account, based on wartime diaries, written by Major D. D. Ogilvie, details the absorbing story of how the Fife and Forfar Yeomanry evolved over the course of the war, and presents a rare primary source record of a hard fighting battalion that saw action on three fronts.

A New Yorker staff writer, bestselling author, and professor at Harvard Medical School unravels the mystery of how doctors figure out the best treatments—or fail to do so. This book describes the warning signs of flawed medical thinking and offers intelligent questions patients can ask.
On average, a physician will interrupt a patient describing her symptoms within eighteen seconds. In that short time, many doctors decide on the likely diagnosis and best treatment. Often, decisions made this way are correct, but at crucial moments they can also be wrong—with catastrophic consequences. In this myth-shattering book, Jerome Groopman pinpoints the forces and thought processes behind the decisions doctors make. He explores why doctors err and shows when and how they can—with our help—avoid snap judgments, embrace uncertainty, communicate effectively, and deploy other skills that can have a profound impact on our health. This book is the first to describe in detail the warning signs of erroneous medical thinking, offering direct, intelligent questions patients can ask their doctors to help them get back on track.
Groopman draws on a wealth of research, extensive interviews with some of the country's best physicians, and his own experiences as a doctor and as a patient. He has learned many of the lessons in this book the hard way, from his own mistakes and from errors his doctors made in treating his own debilitating medical problems.
How Doctors Think reveals a profound new view of twenty-first-century medical practice, giving doctors and patients the vital information they need to make better judgments together.

    Relationship Equity - Your...

“Humanity is the core of our business.” — Richard Walker

As the CEO of a prominent IT consulting firm, York Solutions, Richard Walker has applied the principle of Relationship Equity to achieve tremendous business success as he builds the tech talent pool and helps professionals develop their careers. Walker describes Relationship Equity as the good faith you can build by investing in relationships faithfully and steadily, with no expectation of reaping a return.

In his new book, Relationship Equity: Your Cornerstone Investment to Great Gains in Business and Life, Walker takes his readers on a journey of discovery, examining a principle with the power to revolutionize both business and personal lives.

He explains that the relationships we forge with others are of supreme importance—and when you get those right, the rest will follow.

“If you are a friend who is genuine,” he writes, “you will have genuine friends—and lo and behold— they will want to help you just as you have helped them.”

    Sounds simple? It’s not.

Relationship Equity has many nuances, and Walker explores them all in Relationship Equity. To share the story of how he developed the philosophy, he escorts his readers back to the small-town world of his youth in northern England, then onward to his corporate life at the helm of a thriving American tech company.

“In our families, our businesses, our communities, our world—we need one another,” Walker writes. “We are not islands unto ourselves.”

In his new book, Walker teaches us what he and his company are doing today to pay forward the many acts of kindness that have come his way through the years. Richard Walker has made it his business to change lives for the better, and his business reflects that.
