  On April 2, 1982, Argentina launched an invasion of the Falkland Islands, quickly seizing control. The following day, Argentine forces invaded South Georgia. These aggressive actions were framed by the Argentine government as a reclamation of their sovereign territory, asserting claims they had maintained since the early 19th century. However, the United Kingdom, viewing the invasion as an attack on a British Crown colony, responded decisively. On April 5, the British government dispatched a naval task force to the South Atlantic. After intense naval and air engagements, the British launched an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict concluded 74 days later, on June 14, 1982, with Argentina’s surrender and the restoration of British control over the islands.

  Samuel Ringgold Ward - A Life of...

  Born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Samuel Ringgold Ward (1817–c. 1869) escaped enslavement and would become a leading figure in the struggle for Black freedom, citizenship, and equality. He was extolled by his contemporary Frederick Douglass for his "depth of thought, fluency of speech, readiness of wit, logical exactness." Until now, his story has been largely untold. 
   
   
   
  Ward, a newspaper editor, Congregational minister, and advocate for the temperance movement, was considered one of the leading orators of his time. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 he fled to Canada, where he lectured widely to improve conditions for formerly enslaved people who had settled there. Ward then went to Britain as an agent of the Canadian Antislavery Society and published his influential book Autobiography of a Fugitive Negro. He never returned to the United States, and he died in obscurity in Jamaica. 
   
   
    
  Despite Ward's prominent role in the abolitionist movement, his story has been lost because of the decades he spent in exile. In this book, R. J. M. Blackett brings light to Ward's life and his important role in the struggle against slavery and discrimination, and to the personal price he paid for confronting oppression.

Instead, it argues that much of what people take for granted as "real" is actually the result of social interactions, shared meanings, and cultural influences. In contrast, socially constructed reality consists of meanings, categories, and interpretations that humans assign to objects, actions, and relationships. For example, money has no intrinsic value beyond the materials it is made from; its worth comes from a collective belief in its function as a medium of exchange. Similarly, concepts like race, gender, and even time are shaped by cultural and historical contexts rather than existing as fixed, natural categories.
