Synopsis

Implicating extremes from Coriolanus to Karen Carpenter, David McGimpsey’s Sitcom is both serious poetry and a work of comedy. Mischievous, generous and side-splittingly funny, this collection of wry soliloquies and sonnets begins with a milestone birthday and finds itself in demi-mondes as varied as the offices of university regents and the basic plot arc of Hawaii Five-O – offering, along the way, a sincere contemplationof mortality and the fashion sense of Mary Tyler Moore. Unembarrassed by its literary allusions or its hi-lo hybridity, Sitcom’s strategic and encompassing voice is prepared for each comedic disaster and is, somehow, always ready for next week’s episode.

‘McGimpsey displays erudition, clever insights and a knack for the wickedly funny wisecrack.’

– The Washington Post

‘[McGimpsey] finds thehumanity hiding in the hilarity. This guy is as funny as David Sedaris, and more inventive.’

– The Ottawa Citizen

Sara Teasdale - the winner of one of the earliest Pulitzer Prizes for poetry, winner of the Poetry Society of America prize, and other honors - believed passionately in the power and beauty of love, yet in her own life, love was not enough; she died by her own hand after a long illness. The man she may have loved more than any other, the poet Vachel Lindsay, killed himself two years earlier. Her poetry ranges a full gamut from utter joy to deep loneliness. She expresses herself with utter simplicity: Slowly over the earthThe wings of night are falling My heart like the bird in the tree Is calling... calling... calling.... She can be wonderfully playful, telling a thrush to go call her lover: When he harkens what you say Bid him, lest he miss me Leave his work or leave his play And kiss me, kiss me, kiss me! Her soul valued beauty and love above all else: Oh, let me love with all my strengthCareless if I am loved again.Like many of America's women poets, she is rather on the back shelf these days, but she deserves better. Enjoy this reading of her poetry! A Freshwater Seas production.

Serena and Jeff have one last chance to conceive: Genesis Incorporated, whose glowing testimonials and bespoke treatments surely justify a final roll of the dice.
Meanwhile, Bridget has put it all on ice while she focuses on her high-flying career and on finding Mr Right. And all Miles wants is to be able to afford a property in Zone 4 – oblivious to the fact that, in a different kind of currency, he's actually the richest of them all…
Genesis Inc. explores the final frontier of twenty-first-century capitalism: the privatisation of human reproduction.
Jemma Kennedy's explosively funny new comedy takes a closer look at the lengths to which people will go to defy biology – and at the moral compass of an industry that trades on fear and hope. It premiered at Hampstead Theatre, London, in 2018, in a production directed by Laurie Sansom.

In this poetry collection 'Ways to Say Goodbye'. Anne Kellas takes the listener through dream sequences, abstract and imagistic poems and deeply personal poems of loss. The effect is a cumulative building of a quiet world of reflective resilience as the poet tries out possible ways to do what is almost impossible – to love and to say goodbye."These poems, their accounts of the ways art, chance talk, angels, birds, memories and music can come at us with terrible and tender truths, are gifts that teach us how ‘to read the mind of clouds’." Shakespeare's Philosophy -...

Shakespeare’s plays are usually studied by literary scholars and historians and the books about him from those perspectives are legion. It is most unusual for a trained philosopher to give us his insight, as Colin McGinn does here, into six of Shakespeare’s greatest plays–A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, and The Tempest. In his brilliant commentary, McGinn explores Shakespeare’s philosophy of life and illustrates how he was influenced, for example, by the essays of Montaigne that were translated into English while Shakespeare was writing. In addition to chapters on the great plays, there are also essays on Shakespeare and gender and his plays from the aspects of psychology, ethics, and tragedy. As McGinn says about Shakespeare, “There is not a sentimental bone in his body. He has the curiosity of a scientist, the judgment of a philosopher, and the soul of a poet.” McGinn relates the ideas in the plays to the later philosophers such as David Hume and the modern commentaries of critics such as Harold Bloom. The book is an exhilarating reading experience, especially for students who are discovering the greatest writer in English.

A fascinating meditation on human cloning, personal identity and the conflicting claims of nature and nurture.
Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play of 2002. A Number was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre, 2002, starring Michael Gambon & Daniel Craig.
'A Number confirms Churchill's status as the first dramatist of the 21st century... The questions this brilliant, harrowing play asks are almost unanswerable, which is why they must be asked' - Sunday Times
'Caryl Churchill's magnificent new play only lasts an hour but contains more drama, and more ideas, than most writers manage in a dozen full-length works. Part psychological thriller, part topical scientific speculation, and part analysis of the relationship between fathers and their sons, it combines elegant structural simplicity with an astonishing intellectual and emotional depth...What a tremendous play this is, moving thought-provoking and dramatically thrilling' - Daily Telegraph
'Rarely in my theatre-going experience has a new play conveyed such a disturbing or enthralling impression of domestic weirdness that some families may endure in a not entirely hypothetical future... It's an astonishing event' - Evening Standard
