Beschreibung

David Hume's "The History of England: From Henry VII. to Mary" offers an erudite chronicle that delineates the socio-political evolution of England from the late 15th century to the early 17th century. Imbued with Hume's characteristic philosophical skepticism, this work navigates the intricate tapestry of monarchy, revolution, and religious conflict through a narrative style that marries meticulous historical detail with an engaging, essayistic prose. Hume'Äôs deft interweaving of empirical observation and moral evaluation situates his narrative within the broader Enlightenment tradition, encouraging readers to consider the implications of historical events beyond mere dates and events. Hume, a pivotal figure in Scottish philosophy and Enlightenment thought, was influenced by the tumultuous political landscape of his time and the evolving discourse on government and liberty. His experiences, from his philosophical inquiries into human nature to his engagement with contemporary political theory, informed his approach to writing history as not just a record of events but an exploration of the human condition. This book is a testament to Hume's belief in the utility of history to teach us moral lessons and understand political dynamics. For those interested in the intersection of history and philosophy, Hume's work is indispensable. It seamlessly blends narrative history with analytical insights, making it a compelling read for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of English history during a formative period. Hume'Äôs engaging prose and profound observations will resonate with both history enthusiasts and scholars alike.

The fragments of futile journalism or fleeting impression which are here collected are very like the wrecks and riven blocks that were piled in a heap round my imaginary priest of the sun. They are very like that grey and gaping head of stone that I found overgrown with the grass. Yet I will venture to make even of these trivial fragments the high boast that I am a medievalist and not a modern. That is, I really have a notion of why I have collected all the nonsensical things there are. I have not the patience nor perhaps the constructive intelligence to state the connecting link between all these chaotic papers. But it could be stated. This row of shapeless and ungainly monsters which I now set before the reader does not consist of separate idols cut out capriciously in lonely valleys or various islands. These monsters are meant for the gargoyles of a definite cathedral. I have to carve the gargoyles, because I can carve nothing else; I leave to others the angels and the arches and the spires. But I am very sure of the style of the architecture, and of the consecration of the church. -- From the introduction

The Maya civilization emerged from the fertile lands of Mesoamerica, where early agricultural societies gradually developed into one of the most advanced cultures of the ancient world. Long before the rise of monumental cities and towering pyramids, the ancestors of the Maya lived in small villages, relying on farming, hunting, and fishing for sustenance. Corn, or maize, became the cornerstone of their diet and played a central role in their mythology, economy, and daily life. Over time, these early settlements expanded, evolving into complex societies with trade networks, religious practices, and political hierarchies.
The roots of Maya civilization can be traced back to the Preclassic period, around 2000 BCE. During this time, small communities scattered across present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador began cultivating staple crops such as maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers. As agricultural techniques improved, populations grew, leading to the formation of larger settlements. Villages transitioned into regional centers, where early forms of leadership and governance emerged. These developments set the stage for the sophisticated city-states that would later define the Maya world.
The Maya were not isolated in their cultural development. They shared Mesoamerica with other influential civilizations, most notably the Olmecs, who thrived along the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The Olmecs, often considered the “mother culture” of Mesoamerica, left a lasting impact on the Maya through their artistic styles, religious beliefs, and ceremonial architecture. The colossal stone heads of the Olmecs, their early writing systems, and their concept of a sacred ballgame were all absorbed and adapted by the Maya. This exchange of ideas helped shape the foundations of Maya civilization, leading to the rise of the first great Maya cities.

"...the author does an admirable job of showing just how complicated and interconnected all the great patrician families were and how their jealousies and rivalries ultimately led to their undoing and the end of the great Roman Republic." — New York Journal of BooksThe political process that culminated in the transition from Republic to Empire in ancient Rome began with the military reform of Caius Marius in the last decades of the 2nd century BC. Following the Civil War and Sulla’s dictatorship, it developed further with the First Triumvirate of Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus, and two further civil wars. These wars, which saw Caesar pitted against Pompey, and Octavian fighting Anthony, ended in 27 BC with the rise to power of Octavian, the adoptive son of Caesar. Before Augustus outlines a summary of the last years of the Roman Republic, weaving together the military, political, and social aspects. Scholar Natale Barca sets the protagonists within the complex societal and political system that they operated, analyzing their actions, and the epic battles that ensued.
