  There was not any one entity more central to the Yahwistic Judean religion during the monarchy than the temple of Solomon. It symbolized the presence of YHWH in the nation, as well as his enduring protection of the nation and the Davidic royal throne. Judean worshippers directed their prayers toward the Solomonic temple, and eventually, the Judean prophets and theologians declared that this was the only legitimate location where priests could perform sacrifices and other religious rites for YHWH. Its significance can be seen most clearly in the dramatic cognitive dissonance experienced by the Judeans in Babylonian captivity after the destruction of the temple, which had been so central to their religious conception that they had great difficulty reconciling its destruction with their continued belief in YHWH at all.    
  The most famous church in Jerusalem for nearly 2,000 years, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, often called the Church of the Resurrection, was built in the era of St. Constantine, and the church as a structure has no history separable from the city of Jerusalem and its environs. It is venerated as being on the site where Jesus was crucified and buried, and naturally, making it a crucial pilgrimage site for Christians, and it is now the home of the Greek Orthodox Jerusalem Patriarchate. Moreover, it was the site of many important councils, some of which altered Christian history forever. In short, the Sepulchre was and is synonymous with Jerusalem, and it was essentially the nodal center of the city.  
  The Temple Mount remains the holiest place in Judaism and among the holiest in Islam, and due in part to that religious sensitivity and the current placement of the Al-Aqsa Mosque there, archaeological work is almost nonexistent. The political tensions between the modern state of Israel and the Palestinians have also made the temple and all of Jerusalem contentious issues.

The work provides detailed guidance on how a ruler should manage administration, maintain law and order, and protect the interests of the state.
  
  One of the most remarkable aspects of Arthashastra is its systematic analysis of political strategy and diplomacy. Kautilya explains how alliances, negotiations, and intelligence gathering can influence the balance of power between kingdoms. He also discusses the role of espionage and information networks as tools for maintaining security and preventing threats.
  
  In addition to political and military matters, the book also addresses economic policy, taxation, trade, agriculture, public works, and the regulation of markets. These sections reveal a sophisticated understanding of how economic strength contributes to the stability and prosperity of a state.
  
  The work also outlines legal systems and judicial procedures, emphasizing fairness, accountability, and effective governance. Through these detailed discussions, Kautilya presents a vision of a well-organized state guided by careful planning and strategic leadership.
  
  Although written in ancient times, many of the ideas presented in Arthashastra remain relevant to modern discussions about politics, leadership, and public administration. Its insights into power, diplomacy, and governance have drawn comparisons to other influential works on political strategy throughout history.
  
  Rich in practical wisdom and historical significance, Arthashastra stands as a foundational text of political thought. It offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the sophisticated ideas of ancient Indian statecraft and remains a timeless study of leadership, strategy, and the art of governing a nation.

  The Allied amphibious operation codenamed Shingle was launched in late January 1944. It was opposed by German forces in the area of Anzio and Nettuno. Success depended on the element of surprise, and the speed with which the invaders could build up strength and move inland. This was understood by General Mark Clark, commander of the US Fifth Army, but not fully understood by his subordinate commanders.
  
  This German account focuses on the landing at Anzio as it was the only one that failed to achieve its objective of smashing the German defense and achieving operational freedom of movement. The battle lasted over six weeks, with mistakes made by leadership on both sides, and consequently also great sacrifice by soldiers on both sides. But the operation was not a German success either, and attempts to prevent the creation of a strong bridgehead failed. Ultimately the Allies would reach Rome, and the Allies applied lessons from this battle to facilitate the success of Overlord, launched five months later.
  
  While not complete, as the author did not have access to some of the war diaries of higher levels of German command, this is still one of the best German accounts of Operation Shingle and is here translated into English for the first time.
