  In the summer of 2021, Angela Alaimo O'Donnell honored the 700th anniversary of Dante's death, by embarking on a three-month pilgrimage through the 100 cantos of The Divine Comedy, reading one canto per day. This new collection, Dear Dante, is her response to Dante's epic poem: 39 poems (13 for each of the 3 canticles), plus an additional 3 to serve as prologue and epilogue, all written in the poetic forms Dante loved best: the sonnet and the form he invented, terza rima.

  (“Love compelled me to write”) 
  As with most art, the words in this book were inspired by love. 
  Inspired by women I have loved and one in particular, who I may have loved before. 
  The woman who inspired many of these words is one of the very few truly spiritual people I’ve ever known. In spite of a life often tormented by cruelty and neglect, she retained a rare spirituality and compassion. 
  She enriched my life and for that I will never forget her. 
  These are some of the poems. 
  Written over the past couple of years (something creative came out of the COVID lockdown). Some describe experiences and feelings directly related to my relationships and circumstances. Some figments of my imagination. 
  This book is divided into three sections: 
  Life, Love, and Loss 
  You can start reading from the beginning through to the end, or you can pick a section depending on your mood, or dip in and out at random.

  Descartes asked, How can I know that I am not now dreaming? The Certainty Dream poses similar questions through poetry, but without the trappings of traditional philosophy. Kate Hall’s bracingly immediate, insistently idiosyncratic debut collection lays bare thetricks and tools of her trade: a mynah bird perches in poems but 'stands for nightingale'; the poet’s antelope turns transparent; she dresses up her orange trees with bark and leaves. As the dream world and the waking world blur, the body and the dimensions it inhabits become a series of overlapping circles, all acting as containers for both knowledge and uncertainty.
