Synopsis

Grant Cannon’s father left a hardscrabble East Texas farm for the Colorado gold fields in the 1860s.  After two years of waiting, their mother left for San Francisco and Grant and his brother headed west to look for their father, Dale.  They stumble on a collection of homesteads that the residents, mostly former slaves, call Freedom Town.  They stay there for several years, thinking that Dale is dead.
Dale had been shot and robbed but survived three years alone in the mountains with amnesia.  The brothers find Dale and bring back toward normalcy.  Dale told them where to find much gold and silver, which turned into Cannon Mines.
Grant turned his newfound wealth into a large horse ranch west of Denver.  Three friends also bought multiple sections of land bordering Grant’s.  The small group have to fight to protect their property from claim jumpers, rustlers, thieves, Cuban assassins, wild animals, and Ute horse raiders.  They also helped rescue a Freedom Town resident from a lynch mob in Denver.
This book describes how a man raises himself up from poverty to wealth while maintaining high moral character.  It is chock full of western action, heroes, and villains.

How do we take stock of a life—by what means and by what measure? This is the question that preoccupies Alice, a Taiwanese immigrant in her late thirties. In the off-hours from her day job, she struggles to create a project about the enigmatic downtown performance artist Tehching Hsieh and his monumental yearlong 1980s performance pieces. As she roots deeper into Hsieh’s radical use of time and his mysterious disappearance from the art world, her project starts metabolizing events from her own life. She wanders from subway rides to street protests, loses touch with a friend, and becomes a caretaker for her stepfather, a Vietnam vet whose dream of making traditional Chinese furniture dissolved in alcoholism and dementia. Moving between present-day and 1980s New York City, with detours to Silicon Valley and the Venice Biennale, Activities of Daily Living is a startlingly precise, vivid, and tender examination of the passage of time.

This audiobook contains what I call my “Africanesque Folktales”. They appear in my audio and print book “Remembering Your Ancestral Fire” and are all original compositions of mine. My teacher, Grand Master Drummer Mamady Keïta said about them, quote:
“Taylor’s folktales draw from his experiences with me and his times in Africa. They contain the stuff of folktales of old. They are a wonderful interpretation of African tradition.” All of my stories are sourced from my decades of study with the djembe, my teachers, especially Mamady Keïta, and my numerous times traveling to Guinea, West Africa. The names are based on a
ctual people I’ve known or heard of; the places, on actual places. The sounds you hear in the village were field recordings I did when I was there. I have and continue to create these Africanesque folktales, but there is a trilogy I created that represent origin, duality and plurality, which are presented in this short audiobook.

Detective Inspector Stanley Low is having a bad day. His bipolar disorder is sabotaging yet another therapy session when two bodies are discovered at Marina Bay Sins, Singapore's most prestigious hotel: a murdered prostitute and a dead expatriate. Thrown back into the sordid underworld he desperately tried to escape, Low goes undercover in a city that refuses to acknowledge its dark side. Behind the gleaming facade of Asia's cleanest metropolis lies a corrupt world of gambling addiction, crime syndicates, international money laundering, immoral celebrities, and politicians on the take. Belligerent, bipolar, and brilliant, Low is a Chinese-Singaporean detective educated in London, with a foot in both cities and a mission to eradicate violent crime wherever he finds it. As he closes in on the truth behind the Marina Bay murders, he'll force Singapore to confront the uncomfortable questions it's been avoiding for far too long. Marina Bay Sins may be the sparkling embodiment of economic prosperity, but Low is about to expose the rot beneath the surface.
