    Looking Out - Welsh Painting...

The six sequential essays in this collection provide a narrative of a century and a half of Welsh painting, written with an emphasis on issues of social class and national identity. Through his earlier writing, Peter Lord has contributed to the establishment of an historical tradition of Welsh painting, but because it does not feature in the wider story of Western art history as presently told, the work revealed continues to be perceived as marginal, existing in isolation from ideas and movements in other countries. These essays break new ground by discussing the concerns of Welsh painters not only in domestic terms but also in the context of the ways in which artists in other parts of Europe and in the United States reacted to the common underlying causes of those concerns. The author challenges the idea that the work of Welsh painters is relevant only to the evolution of their own communities and, through confident and detailed analysis, validates their pictures also in terms of the arts of other Western cultures.

"Are you comfortable with nudity?" my manager asked. In the early 2000s, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey—both young artists trying to figure it all out—met at auditions for an unknown little TV show. Given that it was a show about lesbians living in Los Angeles, with the first ever ensemble cast of openly queer female characters, Kate and Leisha knew the project was going to be unlike anything else out there—that is, if it even got picked up.Then, one million people watched the premiere. The show, which came to be called The L Word, turned into a trailblazing phenomenon. Its influence on pop culture, in the political arena, and in the lives of viewers has been lasting, impactful, even life-saving. Hence the name for their branded partnership, PANTS, launched in 2020, and accompanying podcast, which has been downloaded over twenty million times. This friendship has seen Kate and Leisha through their greatest triumphs and most painful moments, stumbling from closeted queer kids in a hostile culture, to LGBTQ+ activists, actors, podcasters, and business owners. Full of never-before-shared glimpses into the making of The L Word, Kate and Leisha's real-life loves and losses, and their experience as queer icons, So Gay for You is a heartfelt, inspiring love letter to a ride or die friendship over the decades, and a testament to the liberating power of chosen family.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Tang Dynasty - Golden Age of Art...

The Tang Dynasty, one of the most prosperous and influential periods in Chinese history, lasted from 618 to 907 CE. Often referred to as a golden age, it was marked by significant cultural, political, and economic developments that shaped the trajectory of Chinese civilization. The dynasty succeeded the Sui Dynasty, which had fallen due to internal strife and excessive military campaigns, and it laid the foundation for many of the political and cultural features that would characterize Chinese history for centuries. The Tang Dynasty's legacy is still visible in the arts, governance, and cultural exchanges that continue to influence China today.
The founding of the Tang Dynasty is attributed to Li Yuan, who became Emperor Gaozu after a successful rebellion against the Sui Dynasty in 618. His reign was followed by that of his son, Emperor Taizong, one of the most renowned rulers in Chinese history. Under their leadership, the Tang Empire quickly expanded its territories, establishing control over much of present-day China and extending its influence across Central Asia, Korea, and parts of Southeast Asia. This expansion was not only military but also cultural, as the Tang Dynasty became a melting pot of diverse peoples, cultures, and ideas.
Politically, the Tang Dynasty introduced several innovations that helped maintain its stability and success. It perfected the imperial examination system, which allowed for a more meritocratic approach to selecting government officials, and it expanded the civil service, ensuring that a large and efficient bureaucracy could handle the empire’s vast territory. The legal system, known as the Tang Code, was influential in shaping the governance of China for centuries and served as a model for other East Asian countries.
