  Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini, born on July 29, 1883, who went by the nickname “Il Duce” (“the Leader”), was a deeply unbalanced tyrannical Italian dictator who created the dreaded Fascist Party in 1919. Eventually, he held all power in Italy as the country’s prime minister from 1922 to 1943. An ardent socialist as a youth, Mussolini followed in his father's political footsteps but was expelled by the party for his overt support of World War I. As an evil dictator during World War II (even murdering his own son by lethal injection) he greatly overextended his forces and was eventually killed by his own people in Mezzegra, Italy. Here, for the first time, are the words of the great dictator himself in his twisted manifesto on the political movement he started and is still so feared to this very day.

  By the spring of 1943, American military planners had begun to create a plan to dislodge Japan from east and southeast Asia. To do so, parts of the Philippines were considered main strategic points in the potential Allied attack in the Pacific. The end goal of the Allied plan was an invasion of the Japanese home islands, in which heavy aerial bombardment would precede a ground assault. In order for this to occur, Allied forces would have to occupy areas surrounding Japan, with China adding to Luzon (the largest island in the Philippines) and Formosa (a large island off the coast of China) to create a triangle from which they could launch their bombers. 
  When Admiral Chester Nimitz was directed to capture an island in the Bonin group, Iwo Jima stood out for its importance in making progress against the mainland, with three airfields that would allow American air forces to attack the Japanese mainland. But the Japanese were also well aware of how important Iwo Jima was, and they fought desperately in bunkers and tunnels that required the Americans to carefully clear them out gradually.  
  Near the end of 1944, as Allied forces were pushing across the Pacific and edging ever closer to Japan, plans were drawn up to invade the Ryuku islands, the most prominent of them being Okinawa. Given the horrific nature of the combat, and the fact that it was incessant for several weeks, it’s no surprise that Okinawa had a profound psychological effect on the men who fought, but it also greatly influenced the thinking of military leaders who were planning subsequent campaigns, including a potential invasion of the Japanese mainland. The casualty tolls at Okinawa ultimately helped compel President Truman to use the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in an effort to end the war before having to attempt such an invasion.

  Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Anglo-Irish polar explorer whose remarkable journeys cemented his place among the most important figures of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Shackleton's story is one of daring, leadership, and resilience, traits that made him a legendary figure in the annals of exploration. 
  Born in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, on February 15, 1874, Shackleton moved to Sydenham, south London, at the age of ten with his Anglo-Irish family. His early life was marked by a sense of adventure that would shape his future endeavors. Shackleton's first significant exposure to the polar regions came in 1901 when he joined Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery expedition as a third officer. Although Shackleton’s time on the expedition was cut short due to health concerns, he had already proven his determination by marching to a new southern record of latitude 82°S, alongside Scott and Edward Adrian Wilson. Despite being sent home early, Shackleton had tasted the allure of the polar regions and was eager for more. 
  The opportunity came in 1907 when Shackleton led the Nimrod expedition to Antarctica. During this journey, he and three companions ventured farther south than any explorer before them, reaching 88°S, just 97 geographical miles from the South Pole. This achievement was monumental, representing the greatest advancement toward the pole at the time. In addition to their groundbreaking southern march, the team also made history by summiting Mount Erebus, Antarctica’s most active volcano. Shackleton returned a hero and was knighted by King Edward VII for his daring exploits.
