Why do so many of us step into the water? Compiled and edited by Rachel Jones, Toes in the Water explores the life-affirming and healing power of wild swimming. With insights from a wide range of swimmers, the book explores the community around wild swimming, interwoven with the mental and physical health benefits which swimmers gain from it. The featured swimmers share the connection they feel with the natural world, and how this can lead to a positive impact on the environment around them. Packed full of inspiring stories, Toes in the Water is a book that could change your life.
The featured swimmers include open-water coach and year-round outdoor swimmer Ella Foote, who describes how the swimming community has supported her and given her skills and confidence in the outdoors; meanwhile, Beth Pearson, co-director of the Outdoor Swimming Society, explains the motivation behind and evolution of creating a wild swimming community. Also, Yorkshire-based wild swimming guide Les Peebles reflects on how healing he finds being in the water and how much joy he finds in helping others to discover wild swimming; and Lindsey Cole, mermaid, adventurer and environmental campaigner, explains how she raises awareness of river pollution through storytelling and activism.

A sport based on one animal sitting on top of another and trying (usually) to be the first pair to reach a wooden stick is a curiosity in itself. So it's no surprise that horseracing is full of curiosities.

The curiosities in this collection have been chosen to arouse interest. They are stories of those curious creatures – people, and of horses.

The curiosities are arranged in themes so that the reader can dip in and out, as the mood takes them. The collection should leave them with a benevolent view of an intriguing sport, if they didn't already have one.

Owners, jockeys, the horses, racecourses, officials, prizes, trainers and staff, racing journalists, betting, bookmakers, punters, skulduggery – one of Britain's best loved racing journalists David Ashforth has found the stories to capture the readers attention on all these topics and more.

    The Monarch Butterfly Migration...

Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate from Canada to Mexico. The monarch migration is a demonstration of nature's ingenuity, but the delicate creatures face many perils, and the number of migrating monarchs is declining sharply. This book weaves natural history, science, and personal experience to explore the rise and fall of one of nature's most spectacular phenomena.

While monarch butterflies have been migrating for centuries, they seized public attention in 1976 when a National Geographic magazine cover story featured the "discovery" of their roosting sites in Mexico. The revelations put a spotlight on the insects and inspired the creation of butterfly sanctuaries in Mexico as well as efforts to protect them. Almost forty years later, many believe that monarch butterflies are in danger of extinction. Journalist and butterfly advocate Monika Maeckle delves into the rich history and current plight of the monarch butterfly. Maeckle offers unique insights on the butterflies as well as a nuanced portrait of the community of scientists, enthusiasts, and "flutterati" who have emerged to support the monarchs.

The Monarch Butterfly Migration focuses a wider lens on the effects of climate change and the tensions between advocacy and scientific accuracy. This book reminds us to notice the natural wonders in our own backyards.
