Synopsis

there are many trees around us, some of which sprout new leaves in the spring and others that turn beautiful colors in the fall. But there's one special tree that stays green all year round: the cypress tree. Unlike other trees, the cypress is always green, and it fills the forest with a refreshing scent called phytoncides.

Like the cypress, you may be different from your friends in some ways, but that's what makes you special. Just as the cypress is proud of its greenness without comparing it to other trees, I want you to love yourself for who you are, because you are all important and special, and your uniqueness makes the world more beautiful.

As you read this fairy tale, discover your individuality and learn to be proud of yourself, just like the cypress tree. I hope this story, which begins in a green village in the forest, will give you great courage and confidence.

Thirteen-year-old Ronnie (Veronica) was looking forward to summer on Harbor Island with her best friends, Mia and Charlie. The trio called themselves "the Clamdiggers," because they were as close as clams. They did everything together: boating, waterskiing, fishing, swimming, and playing their favorite after-dark game—spying on the Island's residents. But now, Ronnie finds that Mia and Charlie are growing up faster than she is, and the Clamdiggers seem to be falling apart. Ronnie finds solace in the company of Fern, an eighty-three-year-old retired concert pianist and the island's eccentric cat lady who likes to roam the island's wild places. Ronnie keeps her friendship with Fern a secret, and discovers that Fern has secrets of her own.
"Vivid, evocative ... Ronnie's impulsive actions, her discomfort with the changes in her friends, and her need to find new companionship will be understood by many middle-school age readers." — VOYA Magazine

I WAS BORN A LAKOTA AND I HAVE LIVED AS A LAKOTA AND I SHALL DIE A LAKOTA.—RED CLOUD

Red Cloud (1822–1909) was a great warrior and chief of the Lakota. Told from his perspective, Red Cloud: A Lakota Story of War and Surrender describes the events that brought him to prominence as a leader of his people and how he came to surrender them to the white man, ending their way of life on the Great Plains.

From the intrusion of white settlers into Lakota territory, to the treaties signed with the U.S. government, and to the many subsequent battles, Red Cloud explains how the Lakota became the only nation to win a war against the U.S. Army on American soil. However, unlike fellow warriors Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, Red Cloud eventually came to accept the inevitable advance of white civilization. He submitted to change and moved his followers onto a reservation.

The story concludes with Red Cloud’s trip to the East Coast, where he visited New York City and met President Ulysses S. Grant.

Author S. D. Nelson reinterprets the nineteenth-century Lakota ledger-art style to give authenticity to the story as he brings to light one of the most controversial members of the Lakota tribe, Red Cloud.
