By the mid-1830s, tensions had escalated, as settlers pushed for greater autonomy from the central government in Mexico City, which they felt was increasingly distant and unresponsive to their needs. Meanwhile, Mexico’s leadership was determined to maintain control over Texas and prevent it from slipping into rebellion.
