Beschreibung

Love, sex, death, God, and nature are just some of the hot, fervent kisses that you'll find in this collection of contemporary, perplexed poetry. It draws its inspiration from the works of Bukowski, Poe, Baudelaire, Ungaretti, Neruda, and the Bible, among others. It reflects the unease, anger, doubts, and rage of our present situation while lyrically transporting us towards possible solutions. For all those concerned about our future this is beautiful intriguing poetry from the Threshold of The End of Days but, hopefully, not the End of Love.

The year is 1842. The British Empire’s bold venture into Afghanistan has dissolved into a horrific nightmare. After installing the unpopular Shah Shuja Durrani on the throne in Kabul, the occupying forces under the inept command of General Elphinstone find themselves besieged, their political envoy Sir William Macnaghten brutally murdered by Wazir Akbar Khan, leader of the Afghan resistance.
Forced into a humiliating capitulation, the sixteen thousand souls of the British column – soldiers, sepoys, and a vast multitude of civilian camp followers – begin their infamous winter retreat. "Gandamak's Fury: The Road from Kabul" charts this catastrophic journey, a ninety-mile exodus from the Afghan capital towards the distant hope of Jalalabad, a path that would become a byword for military disaster.
"Gandamak's Fury: The Road from Kabul" is an unflinching, epic portrayal of one of history’s most harrowing military retreats. It explores the catastrophic consequences of imperial hubris, the brutal realities o

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in Campden Hill, Kensington on May 29th 1874.
Originally after attending St Pauls School he went to Slade to learn the art of illustration. In 1896 he joined a small London publisher and began his journalistic career as a freelance art and literary critic before going on to writing weekly columns in the Daily News and the Illustrated London News.
In 1901 he married Frances Blogg, to whom he remained married for the rest of his life.
For many he is known as a very fine novelist and the creator of the Father Brown Detective stories which were much influenced by his own beliefs. A large man – 6’ 4” and 21st in weight he was apt to be forgetful in that delightful way that the British sometimes are – a telegram home to his wife saying he was in one place but where should he actually be…….?
He was prolific in many other areas; he wrote plays, short stories, essays, loved to debate and wrote hundreds of poems. It is on his poems that we concentrate this volume. They range from the virtues and vices of England and the English to his world view and religious beliefs.
GK Chesterton died of congestive heart failure on 14th June, 1936 and is buried in Beaconsfield just outside of London.
This volume comes to you from Portable Poetry, a specialized imprint from Deadtree Publishing. Our range is large and growing and covers single poets, themes, and many compilations.
