Synopsis

When college student Noah wrecks his car late one night, the last face he expects in the ER is Marcus his father’s old friend, the quiet, rough-edged mechanic who’s always kept his distance. With no other place to heal, Noah ends up moving into Marcus’s house.

Sharing the same roof stirs what both of them have tried to bury. A glance that lingers too long. A hand brushing past in the kitchen. Marcus tells himself it can’t happen loyalty and guilt keep him locked tight. But Noah, done with hiding, refuses to back down.

Tension builds until one night breaks the fragile line they’ve held. Suddenly, desire isn’t the only thing on the table so are loyalties, family, and the weight of everything they stand to lose.

One house. One broken boundary. One love neither man can forget.

Will they choose fear, or finally admit what’s been there all along?

Their story is one of many in Broken Rules, where love burns brightest when it crosses the line.

Men who push past lines and take what they can’t ignore.

A moving and deeply personal excavation of Indigenous beauty and passion in a suffering world

In prose that is evocative and sensual, unabashedly queer and visceral, raw and autobiographical, Joshua Whitehead writes of an Indigenous body in pain, coping with trauma. Deeply rooted within, he reaches across the anguish to create a new form of storytelling he calls "biostory"—beyond genre, and entirely sovereign. Through this narrative perspective, Making Love with the Land recasts mental health struggles and our complex emotional landscapes from a nefarious parasite on his (and our) well-being to kin, even a relation, no matter what difficulties they present to us. Whitehead ruminates on loss and pain without shame or ridicule but rather highlights waypoints for personal transformation. Written in the aftermath of heartbreak, before and during the pandemic, Making Love with the Land illuminates this present moment in which both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people are rediscovering old ways and creating new ones about connection with and responsibility toward each other and the land.

Intellectually audacious and emotionally compelling, Whitehead shares his devotion to the world in which we live and brilliantly—even joyfully—maps his experience on the land that has shaped stories, histories, and bodies from time immemorial.

Emerson Whitney writes, "Really, I can't explain myself without making a mess." What follows is that mess-electrifying, gorgeous, defiant.

At Heaven's center, Whitney seeks to understand their relationship to their mother and grandmother, those first windows into womanhood and all its consequences. Whitney retraces a roving youth in deeply observant, psychedelic prose-all the while folding in the work of thinkers like Judith Butler, Donna Haraway, and C. Riley Snorton-to engage transness and the breathing, morphing nature of selfhood.

An expansive examination of what makes us up, Heaven wonders what role our childhood plays in who we are. Can we escape the discussion of causality? Is the story of our body just ours? With extraordinary emotional force, Whitney sways between theory and memory in order to explore these brazen questions and write this unforgettable book.

All plans hit a wall when photos of Abe and Dusk emerge online, suddenly pushing the band into the spotlight. To take advantage of the sudden popularity, the band offers Abe money for staying.
