Synopsis

In "Barotseland: Eight Years Among the Barotse," D. E. C. Stirke offers an intricate exploration of the Barotse Kingdom and its unique cultural identity. Through a combination of vivid personal anecdotes, detailed observations, and anthropological insights, Stirke immerses readers in the daily lives, customs, and governance of the Barotse people. His literary style is both engaging and educational, combining a narrative flair with rigorous documentation, effectively contextualizing the historical and sociopolitical landscape of late 19th-century Africa. This work serves not only as a travelogue but also as a vital ethnographic resource that enriches our understanding of indigenous societies during a period of colonial encroachment. D. E. C. Stirke was a British colonial administrator whose experiences in Barotseland significantly shaped his perspectives on cross-cultural interactions and governance. His firsthand experiences provide authoritative insight into the intricacies of Barotse life, reflecting the complexities and contradictions of colonialism. Stirke's blend of empathy and critical viewpoint allows him to portray the rich tapestry of Barotse existence while navigating the challenges of external pressures. "Barotseland: Eight Years Among the Barotse" is highly recommended for scholars of African history, anthropology, and post-colonial studies, as well as for anyone interested in the interplay between indigenous cultures and colonial governance. Stirke's unique voice and detailed observations make this volume an essential addition to the discourse on African identity and history.

In this expanded edition of his 2002 book, Zimmerman surveys how battles over public education have become conflicts at the heart of American national identity.

Critical Race Theory. The 1619 Project. Mask mandates. As the headlines remind us, American public education is still wracked by culture wars. But these conflicts have shifted sharply over the past two decades, marking larger changes in the ways that Americans imagine themselves. In his 2002 book, Whose America?, Zimmerman predicted that religious differences would continue to dominate the culture wars. Twenty years after that seminal work, Zimmerman has reconsidered: arguments over what American history is, what it means, and how it is taught have exploded with special force in recent years. In this substantially expanded new edition, Zimmerman meditates on the history of the culture wars in the classroom—and on what our inability to find common ground might mean for our future.
