On April 24, 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off from Kennedy Space Center on the Space Shuttle Program’s 35th mission, but this was no ordinary mission. In its payload bay, Discovery was carrying the Hubble Space Telescope, with the objective of putting the telescope into orbit. The Hubble telescope, working in space less than 400 miles above the Earth’s surface, produced photos of galaxies previously unseen as they existed only 500 million years before the “Big Bang.” It was fortuitous that Hubble outlived its anticipated lifespan by many years, because the launch of its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, was delayed by 15 years.
Several new obstacles delayed the launch, but NASA believed that it was finally prepared to proceed in 2020 after completion of construction four years prior. Then came the COVID pandemic, and 2020 became the year of “delayed events,” with the launch of the most sophisticated space telescope in history proving to be no exception.
The increase in excitement was palpable. Scientists had viewed much of the universe through Hubble, almost as it was when it was formed, but they learned that none of these galaxies were the first ones formed. Then ultimately realized that “Hubble wasn’t the right instrument to detect those first galaxies.” “The farther we can see in space, the farther we can see in time…and that’s not a metaphor. That’s actually literally true,” explained scientist Amber Straughn. The Webb Space Telescope represents “looking in a part of space that we’ve never seen before.” The telescope will be able to detect the earliest galaxies because of its unparalleled sensitivity. Another factor is the kind of light it will collect, “light that our eyes aren’t designed to see.”

Peter Singer is one of the most influential philosophers in contemporary ethics, known for his contributions to utilitarianism, animal rights, global poverty, bioethics, and environmental ethics. His ethical philosophy is grounded in the principle of utilitarianism, which holds that the right course of action is the one that produces the greatest overall happiness or well-being. Singer’s work is characterized by a practical, results-oriented approach, focusing on how ethical principles can be applied to real-world issues to alleviate suffering and promote well-being. His influential works, such as Animal Liberation and The Life You Can Save, challenge readers to consider the moral implications of their actions in a variety of contexts, from how they treat animals to how they engage with global poverty.
At the core of Singer’s ethical framework is the idea that all sentient beings, regardless of their species, deserve equal consideration. This principle of equal consideration of interests leads to his advocacy for the rights of animals, arguing that their capacity to suffer should give them moral consideration equal to that of humans. Singer’s call for animal liberation challenges the traditional view of animals as resources for human consumption and urges society to rethink its treatment of non-human creatures.
In addition to his work in animal ethics, Singer has profoundly impacted discussions on global poverty and humanitarian aid. Through his concept of effective altruism, he argues that individuals in affluent societies have a moral obligation to help those in extreme poverty. Using the famous “drowning child” analogy, Singer demonstrates that if we are morally obligated to save a child from drowning in a shallow pond, we should equally be compelled to help those suffering from poverty and preventable diseases, no matter the physical distance.

Anchoring is my memoir. It details what I have uncovered about myself and reality so far, especially in my journey in the healing arts and sciences. In a story telling narrative, I bring the reader on my winding journey to experience the full breadth of experiences impacting my physical, emotional, mental, and energetic self. Topics include past lives, physics, science, our universe, multidimensional realities, nature of how things work, duality of light and dark, numerous beings of our universe, and how things connect. My hope is that it reaches and helps those trying to deal with great suffering, trying to find answers to nagging questions, and ultimately to be comforting.
