Synopsis

The incredible true story of Tiger Woods’s dramatic return to glory at the 2019 Masters following his humbling and very public personal, physical, and professional setbacks.

One publicly imploded marriage. Two car accidents. Eight surgeries. And now, a miracle of hard work and storied talent: five Masters wins. Once hailed as “the greatest closer in history” before he fell further than any beloved athlete in America’s memory, Tiger swung at the world’s wildest expectations and beat all the skeptics by earning an unlikely fifth green jacket in April 2019. Roaring Back chronicles his road to Augusta and the improbable, phenomenal comeback of one of the greatest golfers in history.

New York Times bestselling author Curt Sampson details the highs and lows of Woods’ career in four gripping acts. Beginning with his stunning arrival at the 1997 Masters and culminating with his dramatic, come-from-behind victory to secure his fifth green jacket, Sampson traces Tiger's extraordinary arc to include his startling loss at the 2009 PGA Championship, his detrimental obsession with his swing, his innumerable injuries, and the infamous late-November night involving a furious ex-wife and a nine-iron. Featuring exclusive interviews with past instructors, caddies, notable golf scribes, Augusta locals, and PGA tour peers, and gleaning insight from valuable secondary sources, Roaring Back places Tiger's comeback in context with the greatest in golf's rich history.

In the end, Roaring Back finds the forty-four-year-old golfer alone on Augusta's eighteenth green as he achieves victory against all odds. As this enthralling book reveals, Tiger Woods never doubted the perseverance of the winner he saw in the mirror. Read it to find out how.

The first in-depth biography of one of the most talented and infamous legends to play in the National Football League-the life and times of pro football's first bad boy, famed Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler.
Ken "The Snake" Stabler was the embodiment of the original Men in Black-the freewheeling, hard-hitting Oakland Raiders. The league's first swashbuckling pass thrower, the mythical southpaw Southerner famous for come-from-behind drives late in the game, Stabler led the Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship in 1977. In an era dominated by gentleman quarterbacks like Roger Staubach and Bob Griese, this 1974 NFL MVP, four-time Pro-bowler, and Super Bowl champion was an iconoclast who partied as hard as he played and lived life unapologetically on his own-not the NFL's-terms.
Though Stabler's legacy is larger-than-life, there has never before been an exclusive account of him, until now. Snake goes deep under the surface of Stabler's persona to reveal a man who, despite his penchant for partying and debauchery, was committed to winning and being the best player he could be. From his college days playing for Bear Bryant at Alabama to his years with the Raiders under coach John Madden, his broadcasting career to his death in 2015 and the revelation that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, known as C.T.E., Snake probes the myriad facets of Stabler's life on and off the field to tell his complete story, and explores how his legacy and the culture and times that pivotally shaped it, continues to impact football today.

“The story . . . has as much vigor and passion as Roosevelt himself. It’s a fascinating and thoroughly American tale.” —Candice Millard, New York Times–bestselling author

John J. Miller delivers the intriguing, never-before-told story of how Theodore Roosevelt saved American Football—a game that would become the nation’s most popular sport. Miller’s sweeping, novelistic retelling captures the violent, nearly lawless days of late 19th century football and the public outcry that would have ended the great game but for a crucial Presidential intervention. Teddy Roosevelt’s championing of football led to the creation of the NCAA, the innovation of the forward pass, a vital collaboration between Walter Camp, Charles W. Eliot, John Heisman and others, and, ultimately, the creation of a new American pastime. Perfect for readers of Douglas Brinkley’s Wilderness Warrior, Michael Lewis’s The Blind Side, and Conn and Hal Iggulden’s The Dangerous Book for Boys, Miller’s The Big Scrum reclaims from the shadows of obscurity a remarkable story of one defining moment in our nation’s history.

“The first complete account of Roosevelt’s football rescue . . . a great story.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Fascinating . . . At a time when a coalition of suburban soccer moms and misguided caretakers of American athletics are hell-bent on watering down the game of football, you should take the time to read this book.” —Sal Paolantonio, ESPN

“A richly detailed history of football’s founding . . . a useful primer, introducing us to some of the sport’s most famous pioneers.” —The New York Times

“Enjoyable history of a seldom explored turning point in American sports history.” —Booklist

The more famous and prestigious matches attract up to 100,000 people and more besides the millions who are glued to their television sets. It is one of the most popular games in the world. There are different forms of football which can be known in history, normally prevalent as the peasant games. Modern ciphers of football can be traced back to the nineteenth century when the systemization of games happened at English public schools. Football spread outside the boundaries of Britain as the British Empire expanded their area of rule. By the end of 19th century the distinctive regional code were emergent: for instance Gaelic football intentionally integrated the rules of local traditional football games to uphold their heritage. The Football League was founded in England in 1888, which was also the first of many professional football competitions. By 20th century many football associations were formed and became some of the most popular team sports of the world.
