  In 1991, Ioan Culianu was on the precipice of a brilliant academic career. Culianu had fled his native Romania and established himself as a widely admired scholar at just forty-one years old. He was teaching at the University of Chicago Divinity School where he was seen as the heir apparent to his mentor, Mircea Eliade, a fellow Romanian expatriate and the founding father of the field of religious studies, who had died a few years earlier. When Culianu began to receive threatening messages, he asked a colleague to hold onto some papers for safekeeping. A week later someone fired a bullet into the back of his head, killing him instantly. The case was never solved, though the prevailing theory is that Culianu was targeted by the Romanian secret police as a result of critical articles he wrote after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu. 
   
   
   
  What was in those papers and what connection might they have to Culianu's death? The papers eventually passed into the hands of Bruce Lincoln, and their story is at the heart of this book. The documents were English translations of articles that Eliade wrote in the 1930s, some of which voiced Eliade's support for the Iron Guard. Bruce Lincoln explores what the articles reveal about Eliade's past, his subsequent efforts to conceal that past, his complex relations with Culianu, and the possible motives for Culianu's shocking murder.

  The End of Feudalism - How...

  Feudalism was a social, political, and economic system that dominated medieval Europe, particularly from the 9th to the 15th century. Its structure was based on the exchange of land for loyalty, military service, and labor. At its core, feudalism established a hierarchical order in which the king, or monarch, granted land, known as fiefs, to vassals (nobles) in exchange for their service. In turn, these vassals would grant portions of their land to serfs or peasants, who worked the land in return for protection and sustenance. This land-based economy was highly localized, with power concentrated in the hands of a few, and much of daily life revolved around agricultural production. 
  The decline of feudalism did not happen overnight but was a gradual process influenced by several interconnected factors. Key to its decline was the increasing centralization of power by monarchs. As monarchs gained more control, often through military conquest or strategic marriages, they began to diminish the power of feudal lords. This shift marked the beginning of the nation-state as a powerful political entity, replacing the decentralized feudal system. Additionally, the rise of a money-based economy undermined the land-based economy that feudalism relied upon. The growth of trade, the development of markets, and the emergence of a merchant class further destabilized feudal structures. 
  Another critical event in the decline of feudalism was the Black Death in the 14th century. The plague decimated large portions of Europe’s population, resulting in severe labor shortages. This, in turn, weakened the traditional feudal relationships between lords and serfs. With fewer workers available, peasants were able to demand better conditions, higher wages, or even freedom from their obligations. This shift in labor dynamics helped to weaken the power of feudal lords, who could no longer rely on a subjugated, large labor force to maintain their estates.

  One of three volumes responding to the 7 October attack, Antisemitic Discourse focuses on the ideology that motivated it and the antisemitism that shaped many responses to it. 
  It examines the provenance of the Jew-hatred, from English history to Palestinian Islamism; from toxic 19th century ‘Jewish Question’ rhetoric to the perversion of the Trotskyist tradition that allowed parts of the left to embrace antisemitism. It includes Howard Jacobson’s lecture of 22 October on antisemitism and it focuses on what was significant about this attack. There is discussion from Britain, Germany, Poland, and Norway, and a linguistic account of responses.
