Synopsis

Satirical Icons explores how satire has shaped political and cultural movements throughout history. It examines the evolution of satire as a tool for political commentary, highlighting key figures and their techniques, while investigating the cultural contexts that have fostered or suppressed it. The book argues that satire isn't just entertainment but a vital mechanism for societal self-reflection and a catalyst for change.

For instance, satire has played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion during watershed moments like the Reformation and the Civil Rights Movement.

The book begins by defining satire and tracing its historical roots, then progresses through specific eras and movements, dedicating chapters to influential satirists such as Jonathan Swift and Mark Twain. It analyzes the impact of their work, culminating in an exploration of contemporary satire in the digital age, from internet memes to late-night television.

By examining satire as a dynamic force that shapes political and cultural landscapes, Satirical Icons offers valuable insights into the power of humor to challenge authority and promote social change.

Everyone is vulnerable to burnout and anyone can succumb to its effects. Empty suggestions, like "just relax" or work sponsored resilience workshops often lead to feeling judged or wasting precious time. Through eight key concepts, therapist Morgan Johnson offers a new way to combat burnout by feeling whole and reconnecting with the world and relationships around you.

Each chapter focuses on a different concept and explains the science behind it. Activities, therapy techniques, journaling prompts, and personal anecdotes are shared to help listeners implement the concept in their recovery journey. Although much of the book expands on solutions that help listeners work smarter not harder, Johnson acknowledges that many elements are out of our control—particularly societal, financial, and political systems that depend on exploitation to thrive. Toxic positivity, compassion fatigue, glimmers and triggers, and other key themes are also discussed.

This book is designed to support anyone experiencing burnout, including the overworked employee, overloaded parents and caregivers, those suffering from chronic illnesses, and those just starting to feel the initial effects of burnout. Ultimately, the book empowers individuals to improve their mental wellness by leveraging their current situation while moving towards a society rid of burnout.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip enjoyed seventy-three years of happy married life together—the longest marriage of any royal British couple in history. But how did they meet? What did their families think of their burgeoning relationship? What obstacles did the young couple face before and after their marriage? And how did a childhood friendship grow into the love story of the century?

In The Queen and Prince Philip royal biographer Helen Cathcart superbly reconstructs the early years of Elizabeth and Philip's relationship, tracing their growing affection from the summer of 1939, when "Lilibet" was a teenager and Philip a dashing navy cadet, through their wartime courtship and magnificent wedding in 1947 at Westminster Abbey. She narrates their adjustment to new parenthood in Clarence House and how, shortly afterwards, both their lives changed forever when Elizabeth ascended the throne as Queen in 1952 and Philip became Prince Consort.

Set against a revealing background of family and wider social events, this is the first full story of their early years together as husband and wife documented from family letters, royal journals, and the personal recollections of those close to the royal couple. The Queen and Prince Philip takes us behind the scenes of one of the most romantic royal love stories of all time.

    Why War?

Why has war been such a consistent presence throughout the human past? A leading historian explains, drawing on rich examples and keen insight.

Richard Overy is not the first scholar to take up the title question. In 1931, at the request of the League of Nations, Albert Einstein asked Sigmund Freud to collaborate on a short work examining whether there was "a way of delivering mankind from the menace of war." Published the next year as a pamphlet entitled Why War?, it conveyed Freud's conclusion that the "death drive" made any deliverance impossible—the psychological impulse to destruction was universal in the animal kingdom. The global wars of the later 1930s and 1940s seemed ample evidence of the dismal conclusion.

A preeminent historian of those wars, Overy brings vast knowledge to the title question and years of experience unraveling the knotted motivations of war. His approach is to separate the major drivers and motivations, and consider the ways each has contributed to organized conflict. They range from the impulses embedded in human biology and psychology, to the incentives to conflict developed through cultural evolution, to competition for resources. The discussions show remarkable range, delving deep into the Neolithic past, through the twentieth-century world wars, and up to the current conflict in Ukraine.
